Players’ ability to log in and play Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn via the North American/European data center was interrupted for several hours late last night/early this morning. Square Enix, in an update on the Lodestone, attributed the disruption of service to a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack by an “anonymous third party”. As of this post, service has returned to normal.
A DDoS is an attempt to disrupt service by flooding servers with activity, to the point where they are unable to timely process requests — or at all. Recently, Blizzard partially attributed launch day congestion for its World of Warcraft expansion to a DDoS. Other high profile attacks include the disruption of PlayStation Network and Xbox Live services.
So far, no party has claimed responsibility for the attack on Final Fantasy XIV.
