Yoko Shimomura Reflects on the Ten Year Journey with Final Fantasy XV

September 28th, 2016 by Natalie

PlayStation has released an interview with Yoko Shimomura, the composer known for her work in the Legend of Mana series, Kingdom Hearts series, and now the upcoming main entry in the Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy XV. PlayStation was able to sit down with Shimomura a few hours before the Final Fantasy XV live at Abbey Road Studios concert.

Among what Shimomura shares, she reveals that she believes she would have felt more pressure composing for the game had it been Final Fantasy XV from the start instead of Final Fantasy Versus XIII. By the time the shift from a side-game to a main entry happened, she had already composed numerous tracks and had an idea of the direction she wanted to take with the score. She also shares that the very first song she composed for the game was at the very beginning – in other words, ten years ago; fans are likely to know this song as Somnus, which is still in the game today.

Shimomura also reflects on the incorporation of the game’s primary themes into her soundtrack – themes such as emotional realism, brotherhood, and bonds. She goes into detail into how the gameplay elements impact the composition of the score, such as how the day and night cycle.

Finally, she reveals what her favorite Final Fantasy entries are, as well as her favorite Final Fantasy tracks composed by someone else.

Final Fantasy XV will be released on November 29, 2016 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
