Tabata Shares an Early Look at Final Fantasy XV

September 20th, 2014 by Tony Garsow

Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata brought along some footage from the game after wrapping up a short session talking about Final Fantasy Type-0 HD and Final Fantasy Agito+ for Vita (which releases January 15th in Japan). In this video we can see Tabata show off all four playable characters (and a frog), as well as manipulate different properties in the game such as rain and the time of day. Then, Noctis and company break into combat against many Goblins and Behemoth.

Tabata also shared that the Episode Duscae demo will be an open-world part of the game and will run around three to four hours. You’ll be able to drive the car and ride chocobos it seems! More information will come about Final Fantasy XV regularly it seems, with more planned to be shown at Jump Festa in December.

Final Fantasy XV is currently announced for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

    That’s a real frog, I know that!

It’s weird, because everything looks very real. But… BUT, the characters themsevles still give noticeable.. fakeness away.

    Maybe PS5 or PS6.

  • Actually, I think they’re meant to do that. I’ve read in an interview that the goal of Final Fantasy is to convince us that these characters are almost real, but at the same time always keep them on the fantasy side. That’s why they didn’t want to make them seem too realistic. If they wanted to I have no doubt in my mind they could. This is Square Enix we’re talking about, they’ve pushed practically every console to its very limits!

  • So, we know have a very exciting holiday season to look forward to!

I get what you mean, but that’s not what I meant here.

I’m talking like maybe in PS5 or PS6 the hair in realtime is REAL REAL REAL REAL. Not kind of almost real here. The hair quality in this game at the moment in demo is a major upgrade from Lightning’s hair in XIII (her hair was like a block LOL). I’m not talking like facial quality has to be a typical human being (whatever that means to you). No, I mean like realistic skin, hair, stuff like that.

The character quality… compare to that frog. I’d say that frog is real. Them characters still look like they can be distinguish as game characters.

I’d like them to do a FF15 FATE event in A Realm Reborn prior the FF15 release.

Another miss for Final Fantasy genre. They are losing the fantasy part by making everything look so real. No more interesting brightly colored cities or Moogles. Gone are the days of characters like Vivi, Cait Sith, Red, Quina Quin. Depressingly real towns with no sort of whimsy whatsoever. This franchise just makes my heart hurt. I hope there is more and better stuff to be seen that is more interesting than how “real” everything looks.

    I hope not a FATE(ew, FATE), but a FF15 event would be fun <3

I love rain in videogames. Might sound strange but I’m looking forward to chilling out in the rain…

We haven’t seen everything in the game yet.

From the trailer, I think we see plenty of colors. If there’s goblins and behemoths and leviathans in the game, Moogle is likely to be in it as well.

Making things real doesn’t make it less final fantasy. If you look at the progression of FF games from the past, every consecutive FF game starting at FFVII for example is an upgrade in graphics closer to realism. This is nothing new. Clearly, this is part of the game to evolve with FF franchise. Aint body want to see block characters on a PS4 game.

Quina wants to catch that frog.

So does this mean there will be all sorts of little cool details everywhere? One thing I really like about GTA V is even though it’s a giant open world, it’s still filled with the most minute details everywhere. So in FF XV can we look at beetles n centipedes and spiders n stuff?
