Square Enix on FFXII HD, FFX-3 Rumors, FFXV

February 13th, 2014 by Tony Garsow

If Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster has given you hope for a similar project involving Final Fantasy XII, Square Enix wants to hear from you. Final Fantasy series executive producer Shinji Hashimoto was making the press rounds in Singapore with Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama to promote the release of the third XIII series game. Hashimoto was by sgcafe to comment on the topic of XII HD:

“…if there are a lot of requests from the fans for a HD remastered version of Final Fantasy XII, we might consider it.”

Like Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2, an International re-release followed the overseas version. Subtitled “Zodiac Job System”, the game incorporated a job system, challenge arena, and other gameplay refinements from the original. It’s possible that such features could make their way overseas should a “Final Fantasy XII HD Remaster” come to fruition.

Hashimoto had more comments about the Final Fantasy series, such as Final Fantasy X-2.5‘s reception. The novella details new developments after the conclusion of Final Fantasy X-2 which has prompted many to wonder if a third Final Fantasy X game was in development.

“That’s not really our intentions with including the audio episode.”

According to Hashimoto, character designer Tetsuya Nomura and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima, who both worked on X and X-2, collaborated to include a new side story and character illustrations to “expand the universe” both games are set in — not with the intention of leading into a third title.

Hashimoto also commented on the development philosophy of future Final Fantasy titles when asked about how the battle system in Final Fantasy XV:

“With regards to the battle system, as the director heads into the planning stages for a new Final Fantasy title, depending on what he feels will be great, he may sometimes end up deciding to go with a turn-based ATB system, or a real-time one.

Whichever the case, what the director is expected to do is to always look ahead, always look towards the future to try and find what the right direction for the next Final Fantasy game should be, and to utilise the right battle system for that vision.”

Final Fantasy XIII series producer Yoshinori Kitase also made comments recently about the ongoing development of Final Fantasy XV, telling VideoGamer that the title is “far along into development”. Kitase also assured fans that Final Fantasy XV has a “very high” priority and other next-gen projects the Japanese arm of the company has going like Kingdom Hearts III would not compete over resources.

It may come as little surprise to hear considering the game restarted development in 2011 for next-generation consoles, as well as major development on the Final Fantasy XIII series at a close.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster will release on March 18 in North America and March 21 in Europe. A Collector’s Edition is exclusive to the Square Enix Online Store for $79.99.

If you’d like to share your thoughts with Square Enix regarding a potential “Final Fantasy XII HD Remaster”, a good start would be to chat up their social media channels on Twitter and Facebook. I had mixed feelings about the FFX-3 anyways, so that was actually alright by me.
Hope to hear more about FFXV, though. “Quite far into development”; well I really hope so!

  • foreveranxman

YES. FFXIIIZJS!!! I’ve played it twice on my modded PS2. LOVE it. It should have been included with FFX-X2. But I understand wanting to keep the stories bundled together. Either way, PLEASE give it to us. It’s an amazing game. SO much better than the original.

  • Chris

    I want everything!
I loved FFX and FFX-2. FFX is to me, the ultimate game, it was perfect. I found X-2 to be a great way to continue the story, it was lovely, knowing about a possible X-3 made some part inside of me happy and even more after seeing Nomura’s designs, I’d look forward to it.
FFXII HD would be awesome! I completed it with a 100% last year and a new version with the Zodiac System would be just fantastic.
Last, FFXV, oh how I been waiting so see Noct’s tale. Hope they provide us a release date soon. The first core FF game Nomura will make, looking forward to that a lot.

Oh well, I never really took the stuff after X that seriously anyway. Still, nice update for XV. That gives me hope for more information to come at GDC or E3. I also hope for both a return for a turn-based battle system and something using LR’s SATB system (a true masterpiece).

  • 1Truth

I need FFXII HD for my PS Vita. It’s my fave FF game and I adore the seamless battle system and Open World it used. The game even inspired Xenoblade!

I really hope for a PS3 HD Remaster for XII. XII is my favorite of the later Final Fantasy titles, I wasn’t fond of XIII at all. If they do go through with this, then I hope that they give it the trophy treatment. I think defeating Yiazmat definitely warrants a trophy.
