The Reality of the Fantasy Based on Reality

We’re about to mark the one-year anniversary of Final Fantasy XV‘s debut at E3, and the eight-year anniversary of its former Final Fantasy Versus XIII self at the very same venue. This bombastic revival of a game agonized over by many Final Fantasy fans made it seem that the curtain would gradually lift, and more tangible details would emerge over time. Since then, information has been extremely sparse — even after Final Fantasy series executive producer Shinji Hashimoto’s comments about Square Enix “withholding details from fans for months at a time” would be at an end.

Well, a lot of months have passed with little to show by way of trailers, interviews, images, scans, press releases, or really anything that would comprise the typical slow drip of new Final Fantasy hype. Really, it’s but one piece of evidence in a growing case — a sharpening reality:

Final Fantasy XV is still a long way off.

In a revised forecast for the upcoming fiscal year, Square Enix reduced its expected game sales (in units) by 5 million to 12 million. Projected sales for Final Fantasy games in years past have been significantly larger, and while this may lead some to conclude that Square Enix has grown more conservative with their expectations, it leads myself to believe that Final Fantasy XV has been shifted to the next fiscal year beginning after March 31st, 2015. This later shift accounts for the game’s ethereal nature in the media circuit worldwide, reverting back to its near decade-long “are we there yet–not yet” existence.

Yes, it’s certainly possible that Square Enix could show up to E3 with new information — perhaps an updated trailer or new developer interviews. However, the scope of development will likely remain ambiguous, too early still to pin anything conclusive down. It’s also possible — quite possible — that the game misses the boat entirely, absent from yet another E3.

A seemingly distant release date for Final Fantasy XV, say in late 2015 or 2016, may ultimately be the reality we are faced with. There are still many tough challenges Square Enix must surmount with the game, most importantly exceeding the expectations of fans who’ve waited years — perhaps building up into something more grand than can be delivered. Can it be done? Well, it might just take some more time in the oven.

In doing so, Square Enix may deem to whet fans’ appetites a bit closer to dinner time.

Final Fantasy XV is currently announced for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

I just don’t get it, why is it taking so long? I know they’re doing it for next gen but come on, why so secretive. Is there some kind of problem they’re not willing to tell us?

  • You know the meme that flips over his computer-desk? well, thats me right now. it’s taken way too long already.

How can it be possible that FF XV is still a long way off. It just can’t be, unless the developers are newbies or just very bad at their jobs. I just think that SE is very quiet with their games. As for years they announced games before there are close to being done. So now they are keeping quiet with everything, I still don’t think SE found that balance with communicating with their fanbase. I think for that to happen SE needs to release FF Type-0/Agito and be more active on their forums/twitter/facebook. Still before that SE needs to stop thinking regional, and understand that they have fans worldwide.

I still think announcing KH III was a bad move, but they could have said “we are working on several unannounced games”

  • it’s not a surprise that it could still be a long way off.

they switched to the next gen. there is likely quite a bit of refactoring of code / scrapping & starting over again in various areas of development.

I think a lot of it has to do with Japanese corporate culture. They’re nothing like the social network-active developers we see out of North America and Europe, but typically don’t talk about something until the product is finished/getting ready to hit the market. It was a bit uncharacteristic of them to announce something so far ahead, but they did it with the announcement of the Fabula Nova Chrystalis. They bit off more than they could chew with that and have been struggling to keep up. The decision to switch to next-gen platforms also meant they had to have a moratorium on announcements as developers weren’t allowed by Sony/Microsoft to talk about the next-gen consoles until those were introduced. So when the PS4 was finally announced, I believe SE announced that development had also started on KH3 in an effort to whet appetites.

No surprise at all. I wasn’t expecting it to be out any sooner than mid-late 2015. I just wish they would make up for it by localizing Type-0!

Well aren’t we being pessimistic FF Network. You been listening too much to online Doubters and Haters, the same ones calling this game vaporware and saying it will never come out? Well don’t listen to the Doubters. XV will more than likely be at E3 this year; with an actual release date is debatable though. But I can almost guarantee new trailer(s) and perhaps a release window. It’s like a 90% chance.

I would more than love to be wrong, but from what I gathered, I don’t believe the game will be out any time soon despite whatever update Square Enix may bring to E3 — if any.

So many downers about this game because of how long it’s been gone. It’s going to release sooner rather than later, given recent news and rumors. And I’m also sure that they’re already working on new projects and the next main entry in the series to make sure we don’t have to wait another eight-to-nine years.

  • ff789n10

I can sort of understand your doubts. It’s been such a long wait already, and no new info since last E3 (of any significance) is certainly disheartening. But I’m very optimistic regardless. Most of SE’s currently announced games are releasing this year (Bravely Second, KH 2.5, FF Agito is already out, Nosgoth, etc.) and even if they announce new ones like Tomb Raider 2, Deus Ex, next Hitman, FF XVI, DQ XI, etc, they are almost definitely not coming out next year. They need something big for 2015, I don’t think any mobile titles they might have slated for 2015 or other smaller projects, is going to cut it. And 20XV of course, cmon. I’m almost positive it will be at E3 in a significant capacity, and release sometime next year. If I’m wrong, I will be severely surprised and very, very angry. It’s just been too damn long and SE is dry of excuses. And games.
