Final Fantasy XV Online Multiplayer – Beta Test Available August 3rd to 8th

July 29th, 2017 by Tom Culhane

Update: August 8, 2017 (Peter)

Square Enix has announced an update and second beta test for Final Fantasy XV: Comrades; this update will resolve matchmaking issues. The second beta test will run from August 11th to August 13th.

The requirements to play this second beta test are the same which is: own a copy of the main game, season pass, and be a PlayStation Plus/Xbox Live Gold subscriber; but there’s a catch. If you don’t download the beta by today (August 8th) or already have it downloaded, you’ll not be able to download the beta and participate in the second test.

There’s still no release date for Comrades also, and it’s unclear if the release window will be affected by this upcoming beta test. Comrades will be available both on its own or packaged with the season pass.

Update: August 2, 2017 (Peter)

Final Fantasy XV: Comrades – Beta test running August 3 – 8

Final Fantasy XV’s multiplayer expansion Comrades is now available for beta testing! The beta testing will be available for download August 2nd and will be playable August 3rd until August 8th. It’s available for people who own Final Fantasy XV season pass, or the Comrades expansion, and PlayStation Plus.

Comrades will allow you create, control, and save up to eight avatars, but customization with elements limited to test version.

You’ll begin in a beta outpost that starts a custom tutorial and will have three quests after completing the tutorial. In these quests, you’ll be matched up with a party online and receive one ingredient for one person per quest that is cooked at camp, and meteorshards as quest rewards. The meteorshards are used for unlocking new quests, and expand your options on available activities. However, meteorshards cannot be used during this test period.

The beta will include a variety of weapons like a katana, club, dagger, and shuriken weapons; attack patterns will vary from Noctis. You’ll also be able to invoke new, sovereign, powers through Royal Sigils with four available during the testing, you’ll be able to equip one of the four during this test.

There will also be communication features during the testing that includes: interacting with other players through pre-text chat or voice chat.

Even though this is not a stable release, there is a lot of promising content in this beta test. There is no official release date for Comrades, but stay tuned for further details and check back for updates!

Original July 29, 2017:

A while back, Square-Enix teased Final Fantasy XV fans with images of avatar creation.  These images, which we now know are part of a new DLC called Comrades, will allow players to create their own characters and participate in online multiplayer activity with up to three other players.

Furthermore, if you’ve paid for the $25 season pass, and have PlayStation Plus, or Xbox Live Gold memberships, you can participate in a beta of the DLC between August 3-8.

While the release date of this multiplayer DLC is still unknown, further details of the full version have been given to us:

Avatars will gain experience from defeating enemies and completing quests, which can be accomplished both online and as single player quests.  You can choose whether to team up with three other players, or fight alongside AI companions.  Additional progression will occur through acquiring meteorshards, which can be used to advance onto higher ranking quests, and expand the scope of available activities.

Players will also get to experience a full city version of the demo base camp.  Further customization elements will be available, with the ability to purchase items at outposts and obtain rewards from quests.

An expanded weapon system will provide options including polearms, crossbows, and shields, in addition to the test version weapons.  These will come with preset abilities and experience points, which can be leveled by meeting certain conditions.

The ability to cook meals will also be included in the Comrades DLC, which will be prepared by camp cooks, and similar boosts to that in the base game.

Finally, online chat features, the ability to make camps, receive quest report cards, and take photos round out the features we can expect with Comrades.
