Final Fantasy XV dev team discusses potentially new story content and clarifies the game’s ending

In a Final Fantasy XV event in Kologne, fans had the chance to meet director Hajime Tabata and some Square Enix staff for a Q&A session about the game. Tumblr user osahirao has shared with us a transcript of the session that happened, which holds a lot of interesting details regarding the story and its potentially new content in the future.

Without further ado!

Audience: A while ago a survey asked about which kind of content we as fans would like to see in the future – so, who won the race?

FFXV team: It was Ardyn’s backstory that the majority voted for – so we clearly got the message he’s the person fans want to know more about. We’re not sure as of yet how we’ll do it though – it’s a lot of story, and telling a character’s story is always the most difficult and detailed part of a game. So, we don’t know yet whether we’ll make it another game; there will be no DLC though, it would be a full game, or a movie, comic etc. We really want to tell his story though. Second in the survey was Luna’s story by the way. And we really want to tell all the background stories to be honest, so let me just ask you guys, who of you would play additional character episodes? *Everyone without exception raised their hands, collective shouting and whistling from the crowd*

Okay then, so how would you like us to release future bonus episodes? Would you get a second season pass for instance if it came down to it?

Audience: Depends on how many episodes are going to be released. If it’s enough for a season pass, it would make sense I guess….?

FFXV team: Well, I think it would be best if we figure out first exactly how many episodes you as fans would want, and how much of that we can actually manage, and as soon as we know, we’ll give you info on how many episodes the second season pass would include, as well as the prices. Would that be okay? *General agreement from the crowd*

Audience: I would really like to know more about Insomnia. Like, at the beginning of the game it’s established they have an own currency, since the guys don’t know what gil are? I’d just really like to be able to stroll through the city and see the culture and everything…

FFXV team: (laughs) Ok, so an Insomnia-DLC? *Everybody laughs and cheers* Or a game like Civilization maybe? I’d like to play that, too! (laughs) Well, actually a lot of people have already been asking questions about Insomnia, so maybe we really should do something about that. We just don’t know how – like, should it be part of a DLC? Of a character-episode?

Audience: Hell yeah Insomnia Shopping Simulator!!

FFXV team: (laughs) No, but really, if you guys have any ideas as to how to implement that, go on and let me know!

Audience: What’s it going to be like, when the game is completed? Everything released, no more DLC’s, when it’s all complete, will there be a way to play the entire game in like, one go? Like, as of now you always have to play a bit, then, when Episode Gladio happens, you have to go back to the menu screen, select the episode, play it, then go back to the main game, as with all the other bonus content. Will there be a finalized version where everything is just put together properly so you can play it all in one go?

FFXV team: To be perfectly honest, we really didn’t think about that yet….I really like the idea! The thing is, that would be really difficult to do, implement all the segments, and I think the changes we would have to make in the programming might turn out to be too problematic…we will definitely think about whether we might find a solution to that. Thank you!

Audience: At the end of the game, Noctis clearly dies tragically, giving his life for the sake of the dawn. Yet, it’s been widely speculated as to whether the rest of the bros died, or if they survived – so, did they die?

FFXV team: You really want to know? *Crowd yelling “Yeess!”* Okay, well, they did not die.

Audience: What about Iris? We heard Prompto say at one point she’s gotten really tough, they call her the “demonslayer”; will we get to see something about that?

FFXV team: Well, actually we were planning on showing some of this in the Comrades DLC, since, you know, it takes place at this very time. However, we’re not sure about just how much we can manage to cram in there – it’s all very difficult still. We do understand however, that the fans really want to know more about Iris, she’s an important character after all, and in these 10 years she changed a lot. And we really want to show that to you, so we’ll find a way, if not in Comrades, then in a character episode.

Audience: Will we someday get more lore, especially about the Astrals and their relations to the royal family, and about the background of Pitioss dungeon?

FFXV team: Ah well, you know, we created Pitioss as a mystery, a puzzle to be solved by the player. The idea for it came up very late into the development, too, in fact, the design was finished just nearing our deadline. We wanted to create something mysterious and magical, no ones knows where it came from or what it is exactly, that’s why in the game it’s in a place no one would find it. No one knows what it is, so let’s just not talk about that and instead move on, shall we? (laughs) When it comes to the Hexatheon, there sure was a lot going on between them, but for now there are no plans on diving further into their backstory. They are a part of the magic of this world, and as such, tightly intertwined with it, but that’s all for now. I’ll keep it in mind though.

Audience: Hello.

FFXV team: Hello.

*silence, laughter from the crowd*

Audience: Okay, so umm….do you like diving?

FFXV team: (slightly confused) …Diving? Um..yeah well, I like diving. (laughs)

Audience: What does Ignis smell like? (They were really baffled about it at first, going on about not really having thought about a character’s smell during development.)

FFXV team: It would have to be a very clean, fresh smell, with a hint of morning-coffee? (laughs) Maybe we should make some perfumes. You know what? We’ll do that! Then you can find out on your own what they all really smell like!
