Final Fantasy XV Details from Paris Games Week

October 30th, 2014 by Tony Garsow

Director Hajime Tabata showed more of Final Fantasy XV behind closed doors Paris Games Week today.

The video footage was reported to include no combat or cutscenes, just Noctis and company exploring vast locations including a forest. Enemy designs seemed to be highly inspired by Yoshitaka Amano’s Final Fantasy work. French fansites attending the event relay that at one point you can see chocobos in the wild and that there is a fishing minigame. It also looks like the team will try to include Japanese voice acting in the overseas versions.

Tabata also showed off another tech demo featuring Luna, saying that the Final Fantasy XV game engine was now a combination of “Ebony”, what the game previously ran on, and Luminous — the company’s new (and likely Final Fantasy XV-exclusive) engine. We also learn that the Episode Duscae demo will release in March 2015; a voucher obtained with purchase of Final Fantasy Type-0 HD will be available, but it’s unclear if the demo will be provided in other ways.

A Square Enix Presents live stream from Paris Games Week featuring Final Fantasy Type-0 HD begins on Friday, October 31st @ 7AM Eastern US Daylight Time. Perhaps we’ll get a glimpse of more Final Fantasy XV footage then!

Update: Tomorrow’s stream will be broadcasted on YouTube here.

Fishing? That’s something unexpected and that I really wasn’t looking forward to. So awesome they add these kind of things. As much as I want to see the game (and fishing lol) I hope they do leave a LOT of stuff unreveleaed. :)

  • Tony Garsow

I really hope we’ll see some of this in tomorrow’s presentation!

  • Ana

That’s not from the Paris Games Week, that’s from the Max Linder movie theater (in Paris) where Hajime Tabata met with some fans who reserved their entry tickets in advance.

  • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Meh, nothing special about this. The scale of the Open World looks nice, sure, but it looks as barren and empty as FFXIV 1.0 was. Also, the character running animations look awful. They really stand out and break the immersion, IMO. I hope they improve them for the final game.

Lastly, why bother having a Day/Night cycle if if it’s going to be so dark at night that you can’t see anything even while using Noctis’ torch? That’s bad game design right there.

I remain pessimistic about this game. Only good thing about these videos was seeing the features of Luminous Studio. What I like about that is that it seems to be quick and easy to make games with the middleware, which is good news for the development of FFXVI by Hiroyuki Ito.

  • Noctis_Strife

This Looks awesome!!!!!!! Stop bitching about barren world etc 13 was too linear for you and now your crying about too barren and empty. stfu

  • You are practically nitpicking for anything to call bad here. This was a demo trailer, the open world won’t be that empty in the actual game. Day/Night cycle is for the monsters and for the game to have a more natural feel. They did it in both XIV and LR and it worked. Plus, this was taken from a cell phone obviously, dont expect to not be able to see anything in-game, even at night. And when you’re in a city the night makes it look all the better. It’s not “bad design”, it’s you not liking it. You can remain pessimistic all you want, but no one ever said that Itou was going to make XVI. As for the “quick and easy to make” part, may I remind you that it’s been 8 years since this game was officially announced??

  • Vander

I find him quite entertaining; how he nitpicks the littlest of things and complains about it then says something about XVI.

  • Yeah but it’s like he’s chasing ghosts. No one ever said that Itou would be making FF XVI… No one even knows if there will BE a XVI!! For all we know, after XV they might make a VII remake for next-gen consoles and considering what we’ve heard about that project it could take them a decade!!
