FFXV Director Nomura on Forthcoming Details

December 24th, 2013 by Tony Garsow

Things have been pretty quiet on the Final Fantasy XV front for quite some time. The recent Jump Festa event in Japan saw no new updates on the status of the game — in fact, the trailer from Tokyo Game Show in September was just about all we’ve heard in a good long while. Today, in a new interview with Famitsu primarily discussing the Kingdom Hearts series, Nomura hinted at the tail end that Square Enix is currently waiting for the right time to release more information about Final Fantasy XV.

It may come as little surprise to longtime fans of Square Enix to hear so little about a project over long periods of time. However, Final Fantasy series executive producer Shinji Hashimoto explained earlier this year to the same outlet that (I quote our earlier article from the E3 week) the “dishonest” days of withholding information about games in development for months is at an end.”

With no substantive update since then, it begs the question:

What’s going on with Final Fantasy XV?

You can read the entirety of the interview with Nomura at Kingdom Hearts Insider here.

Final Fantasy XV is currently announced for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

  • Well, even though once again they’re making themselves out to be liars, I have to say I agree with their strategy. No next-gen console has been on the Japanese market just yet, and they want to see how well they sell before they move on with the game. If the consoles go on to sell extremely well, then that just means they’ll have to push the game out ASAP, but if hardly any of them leave the stores, then they can take their sweet time with this so that next-gen can spread around some more. Square-Enix are betting a lot on FF XV! So they have to make it as big as possible (if they were expecting Tomb Raider sales to be around 3mil in the first month, then you can imagine their expectations off of this, right?).

Okay, this is getting silly. I would have thought they would show something at Jump Festa. But no, not even a sniff of Final Fantasy Agito. And when are we going to hear anything about when Agito and Type-0 are coming west? Tabata and people within Square Enix and Sony have as good as promised that. And I thought EA and Valve were masters at keeping people hanging.

    So basically …
no next gen consoles out in Japan right now
so SE has instead been finishing LR:XII and the FFX HD remakes, among a few other things
meanwhile, some progress was made on XV, but we’re still boned on a US release for probably 6 months
