Episode Duscae Won’t Feature Driving

January 16th, 2015 by Tony Garsow

Episode Duscae is Final Fantasy XV‘s first demo, and will feature players exploring the Duscae region in an open-world fashion. Director Hajime Tabata shared with Polygon some crucial information that fans will need to be aware of going into it. First off, the car that has been featured in much of the trailers and gameplay footage thusfar will not be present. Tabata comments:

“Originally we were planning on making the car be available to drive throughout the world and throughout the demo, but we didn’t want people to mistake it and think ‘When did Final Fantasy become a driving game?'”

Tabata further explains:

“You’ll be able to experience the starting point of what an open-world Final Fantasy would potentially feel like. You’ll really be able to experience that seamless Final Fantasy world within the demo itself, but then if you play it, you’ll still really get a sense that it’s a Final Fantasy game. You’ll get that balance within the demo.”

“We’ve re-thought the demo in order for it to be more playable and accessible to people who know the franchise.”

While driving an actual car in a so-called “road trip” game seems like it would be one of the most important things to give fans an impression on, it seems that it won’t make the cut for Episode Duscae.

Since Final Fantasy XV seeks to evolve the series in new ways (which Tabata reiterates with Polygon) it seems they want fans who follow the game closely to see these big changes piecemeal so that they are less intimidated with the final product — though this too seems a bit boggling for a series that is prone to reinvent gameplay elements.

Polygon also reveals that “the demo for Final Fantasy 15 will be available to those who own Final Fantasy Type-0 on day one.”

You can read more at Polygon here.

A voucher to download the Episode Duscae demo will be available with pre-order of Final Fantasy Type-0 HD.

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD will release on March 17th (North America), March 19th (Japan), and March 20th (Europe) for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Details on a Collector’s Edition can be found here.

Final Fantasy XV is currently announced for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

I’m glad they’re making allowances for people who might find XV a little too new. We can be all over the car when the full game or a new demo comes out.

  • AgitoXIII

Glad they confirmed day one availibility for.the demo!!

  • Felipe Medeiros

Will never use the car anyway.

The demo has no release date.

  • Viktor Kateliev

he said yesterday that the demo will be available to those that own the type-0 HD game on day one, march 17th.

    Where?

  • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

I’m still upset this game won’t have a controllable airship. Way too many broken promises so far with this game. No way it will restore FF to greatness.

  • AgitoXIII

When did they say no controllable airship? And even so i bet there is an airship you get in in some capacity somewhere in XV.

  • Josh Asher

Nowhere, at no point, have they confirmed there is or is not a controllable airship. Give the game a chance, don’t jump the shark here.

  • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Tabata said the car acts like the airship of past FF games.

  • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

In FFXV, the car is the airship.

  • Noctis Caelum

But how will I tokyo drift into squads of soldiers on the road?!!!

  • Viktor Kateliev

in the interview, within the last few days, kotaku and a few places have new interviews.

  • Josh Asher

Yeah I know he said that but it may not mean what you think it means. In other words, imo he did not mean the car has completely replaced the airship. I mean think about it, it’s silly. How can a car replace an airship? It’s nowhere near as convenient or as fast. It would be like trying to drive around the world maps in FF VII and VIII in the buggy/car, which can’t be done and if it could would take way too long. Then consider that XV’s world will be astronomically bigger than those worlds. So then an airship is necessary for late-game travel. Like magic, it’s probably just a feature that is in like alpha design stage and undergoing a lot of work, so SE is not ready to show or talk about it

He never says the demo will be released on day one. A download code for the demo will be included with the Day One Edition of Type-0.

  • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

I think the airship will just function like it did in FFX, FFX-2, and FFXII. We will select a destination from a menu and then be transported there.
