More Details on FFXV, Episode Duscae

September 22nd, 2014 by Tony Garsow

Hajime Tabata joined the Final Fantasy Versus XIII project back in the summer of 2012, having been appointed by former Square Enix President and CEO Yoichi Wada after completion of Final Fantasy Type-0. It was then that Square Enix decided to bring the game to current generation platforms as Final Fantasy XV. Former director Tetsuya Nomura’s departure has thusfar been explained as a need for him to tend to other long-awaited projects such as Kingdom Hearts III.

It seems that Tabata is somewhat self-aware of his new role as director and fans’ collective brow-raising with the sea change. He and Nomura have been meeting on a regular basis about where the project is to go, and Tabata hopes that the recent Tokyo Game Show demo and the upcoming Episode Duscae demo will assuage any fears fans may have. He hopes Final Fantasy XV will convey a sense of bonding and a journey with friends, as recent trailers have shown.

Final Fantasy XV‘s combat is intended to be very flashy, and actions will flow together naturally including combos and cooperative attacks. Much of this is all context-sensitive, for example Ignis’ proximity to Noctis will allow for combos. You’ll be able to pause combat and enter the main menu to change equipment and adjust AI. Weapons are arranged into a customizable deck (and we assume that Noctis will cycle through them in his attack string). Holding down a defend button will let you continuously evade attacks while still retaining the ability to move.

The Episode Duscae demo will take you about an hour to finish if you use the car to proceed from point A to B, but if you get out to stretch your legs and poke about you can easily hit 3 or 4 hours. See that huge tortoise? You can fight it. You can also explore the open-world areas at your leisure, but fierce While there won’t be any boss battles in the demo itself, Tabata promises “something Final Fantasy fans will enjoy”. The PlayStation 4’s Share functionality will be available for the demo, but Remote Play for PlayStation Vita seems like a maybe at this point.

  • Yes, but did Nomura step down because they were stepping in too much?? Will this be Versus XIII’s plot, or will it be something entirely different? Only time will tell I guess…

  • Daniel Masterson

im guessing its just the rest of the game being made at this point since Tabata has been co-director since they restarted development 2 years ago.

  • stevenm281

Plot and characters wont be changed, it’s still Nomura’s creation. Gameplay is altered to be more fitting to FF while still retaining some of the action Nomura wanted.

  • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

This game has failure written all over it. The only good thing about it is the graphics. The battle system sounds like the worst in the entire FF series, spin-offs included. Also, you only get a Backstreet Boys cast with no females? Is this supposed to be the antithesis of FFX-2? LOL!

Seriously, at this point, only Hiroyuki Ito can salvage this once great series. Sakaguchi was not joking when he made that claim.

  • Vander

Gameplay sounds like a mixture of KH and FXII. I’m cool with that.

  • Daniel Masterson

So you played the battle system already or have you made a snap judgment based on a short trailer and what the director has said? How about you wait till the demo before writing things off.

  • Whatever it is, I’m on board! Although I’m starting to get the feeling that story-wise it hasn’t been altered but there have been some elements to this game that Nomura may have wanted to implement that may have been just unrealistic, even for the PS4. But even if that is the case, Square Enix will never tell. It still looks epic though!

  • Oh, even if Itou makes a game, you people will find some little thing to complain about. Seriously, nothing can save this game from the constant pouting of ‘old-school FF players’! You’ve known about Noctis and the other 3 guys for over a year and now you decided it’s a bad thing?! And no, this isn’t supposed to be any form of ‘antithesis’ or whatever fancy Greek word you wanna call it, it has been the way Nomura planned the game and story all along.

I’d like to see what you people would do if Square announced that Toriyama, Kitase or newly added to the hate list Tabata were appointed as Producer/Director of XVI!
