Conversations with Creators: Tetsuya Nomura

September 20th, 2013 by Tony Garsow

Final Fantasy XV director Tetsuya Nomura is featured on the newest PlayCommunity or “Conversations with Creators” series hosted by Sony about PlayStation 4. Since the game is headed to next-generation consoles which include PlayStation 4, Nomura explained that the large pool of memory the console makes use of allows for the team to better render many of the action-packed pre-rendered sequences in real-time. In previous titles, such sequences would have to be reserved for cinematics. Things that were considered “impossible” before can now be rendered with a large pool of memory to render assets quickly and efficiently.

The game is still a part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series of Final Fantasy titles, though, like Type-0, the world in which the game is set is clearly and separately defined — a different interpretation of the lore originally penned by Kazushige Nojima at the start of the project about a decade ago. The game’s theme is still a “fantasy based on reality” in which the world is very similar to ours in many respects, but that fantastical elements grow within. The game will primarily be about Noctis and company retreiving stolen crystals for the Lucis Kingdom, but expect the relationships between many of the characters to be at the forefront like many Final Fantasy games in the past.

The fast-paced combat of Final Fantasy XV has taken on an action-RPG feel, and will also make use of sequences rendered in real time such as the scene where Prompto cover Noctis, or when the team takes down an Iron Giant. While the type of combat has switched to an action-RPG, the team felt that for it to feel more like Final Fantasy — the damage would need to be displayed on-screen. You and your party memebers will fight with you, sometimes moving around the map and with battles where you may have to change tactics very quickly.

Nomura and the team are still expressing interest in bringing some element of Final Fantasy XV to mobile phones or portable devices in the attempt to make a more persistent game experience. He knows players’ expectations for the game are very high, and so he and the staff want to live up to them by creating the best experience Final Fantasy XV can deliver — so please look forward to it!
