Square Enix Presents — Live @ E3 — Day 1

June 10th, 2014 by Tony Garsow

The first day of Square Enix Presents is about to kick off! We’re expecting a performance from the Nanaa Mihgos, Letter from the Producer Live (with live English translation) for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, and more details on Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy Curtain Call! We’ll be liveblogging all the updates and information in this very post, so stay tuned for the latest on any surprises!

The day’s news is pretty big — hit the jump below to see everything!

FINAL FANTASY TYPE-0 HD and FINAL FANTASY AGITO announced for localization! (Click for more.)

FINAL FANTASY VII G-BIKE officially announced for mobile smartphones! (Click for more.)

Letter from the FFXIV Producer Live @ E3

• FINAL FANTASY XIV: A REALM REBORN “A Realm in Peril” trailer released!

• The Nanaa Mihgo’s performance from November 2013 is playing.

>> English translation provided by localization lead Michael Christopher Koji-Fox! (Fernehalwes!)
>> The Leviathan battle challenge has only had one winning team!
>> Fernehalwes is back, baby!
>> Will the team add a /hug emote? (Yoshida e-slaps Bayohne) Yoshida wants to add a /slap emote.
>> Will there be crafter/gatherer Relics? In 2.3 Item Desynthesis will allow crafters break down items to make into new ones. Yoshida asks if players want glowing tools!
>> What about new areas in Coerthas and the surrounding areas? 2.3 will introduce the Carteneau Plains as a Frontline — an area with a new mode of PvP. As for Coerthas? Looks like we may have to look forward to it!
>> What about the “crazy hard battle” that’s been hinted? Brutal Binding Coil of Bahamut confirmed!. The original version of the fights will be introduced, prototype versions even the dev team couldn’t beat! More random mechanics will be introduced, thus “Brutal!” Brutal stages will require you to complete the normal difficulty — weekly lockouts still apply where applicable. Titles will be rewarded. Will come in Patch 2.3!
>> Since it’s been a year since E3 they want to show us a new video!
>> Rogue/Ninja will be coming Patch 2.4!

>> Rogue/Ninja have a faster running speed and take less fall damage. The Rogue class will be able to use poisons for different situations.
>> The Ninja job won’t be as position heavy like Monk, focus is on poisons.
>> Rogue/Ninja will be DPS, new tank and healer are boing poised for expansion.
>> Will there be more FATEs like Behemoth and Odin? In 2.3, The Hunt will be introduced which will have NM-like monsters. Going forward they’ll think about it!
>> Will we get a Minstrel Ballad to fight the Imperial Legatus from the main story? It’s up to the Minstrel, Yoshi-P says. The team thought about it for the Fan Festival against the four generals — so the team is considering it going forward since ask for it!
>> Private housing isn’t ready yet, but private chambers (in a FC house) will be ready for 2.38. Individual housing is set for around 2.38.
>> Shiva won’t be a bike! The team wanted Shiva for E3 banners because she’s sexy! Her story is very long and complicated and will start in 2.3.
>> What about 8-man dungeons? Based on different parts of the globe demanding different types of dungeon content, the team would like to introduce an ability to solo dungeon or dungeons for 8 people. However they have to be addressed one at a time and they want to make sure that they are balanced and presented in the right way first.
>> With regard to Free Company content, there are many different companies with different populations — it’s difficult to design content around that so none is planned. The team is thinking about goals Free Companies can do, such as smaller groups within larger free companies. Something that both small and large Free Companies can do.
>> Will unique stats return for items (Jump+20, Shield Bash+20)? The challenge with doing that is that encounter design may make it difficult requiring to have a certain weapon to participate. Going forward the team wants to consider more interesting stats on items, but balance is a priority.
>> What happened to airship building? You’ll be able to build an airship in a free company house basement — the power of magic will be able to compress the size of the airship so that you can work on it inside your house. Perhaps more than airships can be shrunk! The white silhoutte (in the image below) represnts a player size.

>> For the Player Marriage system, the team is planning it for 2.4. Two players (regardless of race or gender) will be able to participate in the events!
>> What about Free Company Primals? The team is still working on it — but the team is looking for a way to incorporate it into the story.
>> A tool to calculate PvP damage is being considered — something like a training dummy.
>> The Zodiac quest tier after Novus will change the appearance of the Relic. The final tier, something the Zodiac Braves would have used, will be designed to look as such.
>> What about queueing with your chocobo out? They know that players really want this, but it’s very difficult to implement and may slow development of new content tied to the Duty Finder. They’ll still continue to look into it but a date for it is unknown.
>> Regarding different layout settings per role (tank, healer, dps) — it’s difficult but the Minagawa-san is looking into implementing it. When they know when they can implement it, a date will be announced.
>> More details on the Fan Festival? A special website will go up and tickets will be available through it — looks like a special in-game item will be available for ticket purchases!
> Live Letter @ E3 has concluded!

Interview with Curtain Call producer Ichirou Hazama

>> How did Hazama-san get started at Square Enix? He started in Square Enix merchandise and with third party contractors.
>> The original was the first game of it’s sort (for the franchise), but with Curtain Call, since this would be the last of its kind we wanted it to be a culmination of our efforts.
>> The Versus mode is one of the new features, conceived by Tetsuya Nomura.
>> You’ll be able to play through the internet in Versus mode, and ProfiCards are a social feature for this. The team wanted fans to come together and enjoy the game.
>> It was a challenge to sift through the many songs from the many games in the series. If it were up to the staff, they feared that some staff may have bias towards a game, so fans were polled to see what songs they wanted to see in.
>> Using CollectaCards you can boost your character stats (through the CollectaCrystarium) so, for example, you can create a Vivi that has max stats.
>> Asked about his own skill level at the Theatrhythm games, Hazama reckons he’s good at the game but lost matches at Tokyo Game Show. He’s looking forward to his rematch with FFXIV director/producer Naoki Yoshida and wants to win!
>> indieszero and SAS were responsible for the balancing the game, Hazama says he’s not that good to balance it himself!
>> What’s the producer’s role? He’s not directly involved in the development process, but building the bridge between Square Enix (publisher) and developer (indieszero, SAS), keeping the project in line, and boosting morale of those involved with building the game.
>> Hazama was inspired by Final Fantasy VI‘s opening scene with Terra, Biggs, and Wedge marching toward Narshe in magitek armor. Four or five years after he started at Square Enix, he was able to realize an idea he had to put Square Enix visuals and music together in a rhythm game.
>> Hazama gets asked all the time if he plays any instruments — he doesn’t. He says those who make baseball games don’t have to be good at baseball, but he wanted to make a music game. If he were to learn any instruments, he’d like to try something that isn’t fancy.
>> Some of Hazama’s favorite songs from the series include: Final Fantasy X “To Zanarkand”, Final Fantasy X-2 “Kuon-Memories of Light and Waves”, Final Fantasy XIII — he likes playing the field music in Theatrhythm.
>> The polls decided what songs to include or cut, and some were difficult decisions. However many of the songs from polls were from Final Fantasy VII so the team had to intervene to keep balance in the selection of songs from the series.
>> We approach the composers (Uematsu, Soken, etc) to ask for permission to include them — the composers will also provide feedback where the songs are cut for each course.

Today’s schedule is as follows:
