Square Enix: Final Fantasy “Go There” Campaign

July 18th, 2013 by Tony Garsow

As you may have read, Square Enix is planning in-game collaborations between Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Today, the company has unveiled a new website featuring a Final Fantasy “Go There” campaign that highlights these features. It’s important to note that Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD is also included in the trio of games.

In Lightning Returns, players will be able to get a Miqo’te costume for Lightning that will give her a unique victory pose. Just as Cloud’s SOLDIER outfit and Buster Sword will give Lightning his trademark victory pose, the Final Fantasy XIV outfit will be the Miqo’te female’s unmistakably cat-like “/pose” emote.

In Final Fantasy XIV, not only will players be able to unlock Final Fantasy XIII-themed clothing, but weapons from the Final Fantasy XIII cast as well. Lightning herself will also be making an appearance in the game through the FATE system, which draws together players who may normally be playing solo to complete multiplayer objective. As for a canon reason why Lightning is in Eorzea? We are told to “rest easy” by director Yoshida as far as the details are concerned.

Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD is also included in the campaign, and we know that Lightning will get a Yuna costume at some point after it was unveiled at E3. If any Final Fantasy X characters will appear in Final Fantasy XIV’s Eorzea — it seems that the possibility is likely after director Yoshida commented that he wanted players to “fantasize about the possibilities” of Final Fantasy series cameos in the game.

Square Enix hasn’t detailed any content that could potentially come to Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD from either of these games, but a question remains: “will Final Fantasy go there?”

I can’t believe Square-Enix went there. It’s perfectly ok to have an outfit from a different entry integrated within the game (since additions from previous entries have been done before in such minor forms, such as “Kain’s Lance” or other tidbits), but to take a main character from one numbered entry and put her in another is just something you don’t do! FF XIV crossed a line and just because of that, I’m no longer interested in it. I already have a story about Lightning, I don’t need another. It’s a shame too. Yoshi-P’s team were doing a fine job until this.

I totally agree with you. These games just completely suck now. Ruined the whole franchise. I felt the same way about Cloud being in FFT. It was the best game I had ever played until I found Cloud and I just threw the game down and broke it.

Putting the miqote costume on Lighting is reeeeeeeeally inappropreiate givin the the type of character she is.
These crossover are jus the wrong way to do fanservice.

And Square Enix torpedoes yet another character’s personality in the name of fanservice. Good thing I hated Lightning to begin with.

  • “(…) until I found Cloud and I just threw the game down and broke it.

Pay attention kids, this is what overreaction sounds like.

Umm… I think what I said is being misinterpreted. I never said I had a problem with the SOLDIER outfit or the Miqo’te outfit coming into Lightning Returns. Those are just costumes and if you choose to ignore them, you can. From what we know so far, it’s not like you get any crucial power up from them or that they’re even involved in the story. Lightning Returns will be a great game by the looks of it! The line was crossed by XIV. So far, we’ve never seen a main character from any of the previous numbered entries make it into another one. They all had their individual stories to tell and once those stories were told we said goodbye to them. That’s one of the things that’s so great about Final Fantasy. Once one chapter is closed, a new one is opened. What makes Lightning so special that she gets to break this rule? Sure, there have been games that had characters from previous entries (Dissidia, Theatrythm) and that’s what they were for. Fan-service. So that the newer generation of FF players can get to know them. But there was a line that was never meant to be crossed. XIV screwed up big time! What can I say? I just hope Lightning doesn’t make it into Noctis’s world at this point! (Not that I have anything against Light, it’s just that she had her story. It’s time to move on.)

  • Hopefully Lightning will quiet down for good from LR forth, and everything XIII-related along with the character. Imagining her in XV is a rather unpleasant thing, her or any other FF character for that matter. Not being much interested in either XIV or LR, I can’t say I’m bothered to any proper degree of dissatisfaction, but this surely isn’t ringing well for the time being and I, or we, can give SE the benefit of the doubt that they haven’t raised this new standard for themselves and will go on to pretend it’s what “everyone” desires.

Well, I for one LOVE the new costumes and the inter-FF cameos. I’ve been a Final Fantasy fan since 6 came out, and it’s made a massive impact on my life.

At the end of the day, i’m happy to have ANYTHING from Final Fantasy. I’m an FF nut, so anything they bring out, I will lap up. If they decide that they want to bring in characters from other FF’s, then GREAT, FINE. As long as they back it up with an acceptable storyline, then i’m glad to see them. In fact, I loved that Balthier, Cloud, etc. were in Tactics. I’m definitely going to preorder the Lightning Returns with the Cloud costume. It’s like there’s a little in-joke or reference for fans of the series.

As far as I’m concerned, i’m never going to be complaining about more Final Fantasy. Even if it’s from a FF already released.

And to say it’s ‘ruined the whole franchise’? That’s definitely an over reaction and quite shallow.
