Server shut-off for FFXI/XIV

March 13th, 2011 by Tony Garsow

In reaction to the recent events that have crippled Japan’s infrastructure in the past few days, Square-Enix updated The Lodestone with a message to fans of Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV. In order to conserve limited resources like bandwidth and electricity, the servers will go offline until further notice. Other online services in Japan such as Metal Gear Online have stopped services for this very reason. Square-Enix in and of itself has weathered the disaster; they are located in Shibuya in Tokyo and aside from a lot of shaking, the main office of the company is intact. We have not heard from Square-Enix Osaka, but that office is located further from the epicenter of the earthquake. Square-Enix has cancelled their merchandise events until further notice.

An exerpt from the official statement made by Square-Enix:

“We are now analyzing the situation and studying very hard what we can do to fulfill our social responsibilities under the unusual circumstances, and to mitigate the inconvenience to our players. According to our best estimate at this point, we will temporarily have to shut down the servers shortly. We will give you as much advance notice as possible under the rapidly changing circumstances.”

If you would like to help out with disaster relief, you can visit the American Red Cross to find out how to help.

Update: Square-Enix updated their Members’ Twitter today to inform that the Square Enix Members Japan website server will remain up as it is a social media site and may help to determine if a person is alright by their activity timestamps.
