A Realm Reborn Update with Familiar Faces

August 13th, 2013 by Tony Garsow

While Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn‘s story is a continuation of Legacy Final Fantasy XIV, newcomers to the game will eventually get up to speed on the major events that transpired in the past as well as continuing the tale after Bahamut‘s wrath five years prior to present day. Of course it’ll be told throughout your exploits as a newfangled adventurer, interwoven with the theme of the Crystal — present in many Final Fantasy game to date. 4gamer shares with us more images from the game, as seen below.

But, it’s not just crystals that will return, but many Final Fantasy mascot characters that have had a unique presence in the past. Cid nan Garlond, of Garlond Ironworks, was introduced in Version 1.0 as a Garlean magitek engineer seeking to arm the citizens of the realm against the Garlemald’s occupation of Eorzea. He was also involved in Project Meteor — which we eventually came to know as Dalamud and the subsequent destruction it wrought. Biggs and Wedge are also engineers from Garlond Ironworks — you’ll encounter them through the main story.

We previously learned that Gilgamesh make his way through the void to Eorzea, and today we have his CG render, complete with his instruments of battle. You’ll also be able to challenge the pantheon of Eorzea’s Primals, summoned beasts from the Aether that will shape much of the story you’ll play through on your adventure. Ifrit, Garuda, and Titan’s encounters have already been revealed and Leviathan, Ramuh, and Shiva will round the roster out post-launch. You can also challenge Odin through the game’s FATE system, events anyone can join without need of a party. That by no means implies he’s a pushover though! The Great Labyrinth of Bahamut under Eorzea will presumably lead us to discover the fate of the Primal that nearly destroyed Eorzea five years ago.

The newest job to be revealed for Final Fantasy XIV is the Scholar, seen below in the corresponding Artifact gear. Scholar is one of two job branches (the other being Summoner) that can be pursued by levelling up the Arcanist class. Artifact gear, which makes you look like the job you’ve chosen, is obtained through a series of quests that can be soloed, but will be challenging nonetheless according to director Yoshida. Of course, the payoff is you’ll resemble one of many iconic Final Fantasy classes in the game — something that is earned, not given!

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will release on August 27th for Windows PC and PlayStation 3.

Beta Test phase 4 will run from August 17-19. Those who participated in the Beta Test phase 3 will be able to participate from August 16th. Early access will run from August 24th until the 26th with official service begins on August 27th, but the servers won’t go down after Early Access, so you’ll be able to play non-stop from August 24th.

Square Enix send me an email saying that they will soon send me my promotional code to participate in the PS3 Phase 4 of the Beta and I was wondering if the game client will be available to download today on PSN since it always updates itself on Tuesdays.

It would suck to lose a whole night of playtime just to download the client Friday.
