A Realm Reborn Exceeds 600k Subscriptions

November 6th, 2013 by Tony Garsow

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn‘s first subscription figures have been revealed, showing that over 600,000 subscribers are currently playing the MMORPG worldwide. This figure currently beats the peak subscription numbers for Final Fantasy XI, the series’ first MMO, which was released eleven years ago — which is still in operation.

Final Fantasy XIV’s original release in 2010 was met with heavy criticism from press and fans alike. After restructuring the team, the decision was made to remake the game from the ground up as opposed to letting Project Rapture’s reputation blemish the series for years to come. While Square Enix had more conservative estimates for subscriptions, it seems that the gargantuan effort put into rebooting the game has won favor amongst its most staunch critics.

The next major challenge for director/producer Naoki Yoshida and the team is player retention. A new content patch, Version 2.1, is a large update to the game that will include many new features such as: Player-vs-Player arena content, Alliance content in the form of Crystal Tower raids, Player Housing, and much more. The team plans for major updates to the game to come every three months, but we at Final Fantasy Network are expecting Version 2.1 to arrive as an early Christmas present this December.

If you’re currently subscribed to Final Fantasy XIV, what are you most looking forward to in upcoming content — and what would you like to see implemented that hasn’t currently been announced? Leave your thoughts in a comment below!

    Commenting has been fixed — sorry for the inconvenience.
    I’ll be looking into a new commenting system — likely Disqus.

    @Tony
    Please, if it’s Disqus, could you make sure there’s an option for people to comment as guests? Many other sites don’t do that and it’s infuriating when you don’t actually want to sign up.

  • Tony Garsow

    @AnimaMagna Sure, I’ll consider that since you asked for it.

    600,000 people currently playing and subscribed to FFXIV.

    Total sales numbers I believe were 1,450,000

    So the retention rate is almost 50% – that’s not bad at all.

  • Arke Vaughnek

    Also, if you add in the original FFXIV sales with it, that’s an additional 960,000 sales.

    So in total FFXIV has sold 214,000,000 2.1 million. Nice.
