A Realm Reborn Celebrates First Anniversary

The Wandering Minstrel returns in The Rising seasonal event to greet a Warrior of Light.

Today marks the first anniversary of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn‘s launch. Celebrations have included a 14-hour Anniversary Broadcast, artwork countdown, the return of crossover events, and the debut of The Rising seasonal event.

Looking back some time now, back during the final days of Version 1.0, it was hard to gauge just what would come of the team’s ambition to completely redo what had become an unfortunate laughingstock of a MMORPG and a blight on the Final Fantasy franchise’s history. Wandering the Carteneau Plains in Mor Dhona before the final battle, I savored what could perhaps have been the final days of Final Fantasy XIV forever — unsure the “Version 2.0″ project would come to fruition and that the fourteenth numbered title was salvageable.

Version 1.0 serves as a clarion call to Square Enix to never take fans and their expectations for granted.

After the 1.0 servers went down, and as time went on, we began to get a look at the new game beyond the glamor of the End of an Era trailer. Slowly and surely, the promise of rebirth and redemption began to percolate through the fandom and in tertiary circles — which generated a lot of interest in something that I feared was dead on arrival. Cautiously optimistic, as we neared A Realm Reborn‘s launch — and after the well-received alpha and beta phases, you could feel the wind in the game’s sails.

What resulted is one of the biggest turnarounds — if not the biggest turnaround a game’s received in all the years I’ve enjoyed video games. For a MMORPG, this was no small feat, especially in today’s current market — second chances would have otherwise been unheard of.

Congratulations and thank you to Square Enix and the Final Fantasy XIV staff for their hard work and dedication for making A Realm Reborn what I’ve always expected from the Final Fantasy series: a game that can challenge and surpass my expectations and be truly enjoyable on nearly every level. Thank you for not giving up. Director/producer Naoki Yoshida has well-earned bragging rights, yet remains humble, open, and ambitious in his address to players today.

Final Fantasy XIV’s redemption story is of trust earned through humility, honesty, and a drive to exceed.

While there are definitely hurdles the game has yet to surpass, I hope to see Final Fantasy XIV continue to weather the storm of uncertainty that still hangs over Square Enix’s Japanese game development, and that it receives the long legacy its predecessor Final Fantasy XI has earned. I greatly anticipate what each new patch and the soon-to-be-revealed expansion will bring. As long as Square Enix and the Final Fantasy XIV team remain faithful to the ideals they made work for the game going forward, I want the game to continue to bask in its well-deserved success.

You can take part in The Rising seasonal event by heading to The Aftcastle in Limsa Lominsa to initiate a quest. Completing this quest will earn you a Huzzah emote and a nostalgic mini-game for your inn room’s Toy Chest. Speak to The Rising vendor (1.0 veterans make note of this NPC’s familiar appearance) to obtain Magicked Prisms that contain themed fireworks,Wind-up Minfilia and Wind-up Thancred minions, and a little A Realm Reborn Red bubbly to spray every which way.

The Rising seasonal event will conclude on Monday, September 8th.
