Welcome to the Manderville Gold Saucer

February 19th, 2015 by Tony Garsow

Letter from the Producer Live from Tokaigi Game Show 2015, where we get an extended look at Gold Saucer.

“Come One Come All” and “Where Every Dream Is Gold And Everyone Leaves A Winner” reads the Eorzean script on a flyer designed by the art team. Starting next Tuesday, with the release of Patch 2.51, the Manderville Gold Saucer will open in Final Fantasy XIV.

Inspired by the Final Fantasy VII theme park, players will find many mini-games of varying sizes to get lost in. Square Enix has released a treasure trove of new screenshots today — so we’ll go through the attractions one by one so you get an idea of what’s coming soon.

First, a major attraction coming with Gold Saucer is Chocobo Racing. In races, you’ll be competing against seven other players on your racing chocobo. By expending Stamina, you’ll get a boost to your speed, but you’ll need to conserve it so that your chocobo doesn’t get tuckered out. Your chocobo can use a variety of abilities and items to influence the race, so you’ll need to be aware of your competition at all times.

Races will earn your chocobo experience points and higher ranks — meaning more stats that will affect your performance. You can also choose to retire your chocobo at a certain point and have it mate with another to produce an offspring. This offspring has the possibility of inheriting traits and abilities from its parents so it is possible to breed a great chocobo with enough care and attention.

So far we’ve seen three courses available, but director Yoshida has also said that come Heavensward, it may be easier to do a flying chocobo course. We’ll have to look forward to that.

Next up is a mini-game that many will remember from Final Fantasy VIII: Triple Triad. It’s a card game in which two players use five cards with different values representing the four sides of each card. In the most basic sense, the goal is have a card usurp and adjacent card’s value on the matching side. The winner is decided after nine turns. You’ll be able to challenge NPCs in the Gold Saucer, NPCs out in the world, or your fellow players (though you won’t lose cards should you lose to another human being).

Many different rules can be used in Triple Triad, and there are new ones being designed for Final Fantasy XIV as well. Any extra cards you acquire can be redeemed for Manderville Gold Saucer Points (MGSP) — the untradable currency of the Gold Saucer.

You’ll be able to collect cards in a variety of ways: by defeating NPCs in matches, by buying them with MGSP, or by obtaining them as drops through duties (battle content). You’ll be able to sort and customize your decks in a Card Binder. To start, there will be 80 cards in the game, and more will be added through future patches. The team is also looking into holding tournaments in the future.

The Cactpot is a daily and weekly lottery for Manderville Gold Saucer Points — by buying a ticket you’re entered in a possible winner. Of course, you’ll need to remember to redeem your prize if you win — and as such the team will be basing the winning announcement around peak times for each data center and on the weekends. Redeeming a winning ticket with three hours will give you a bonus.

Other mini-games include tests of strength and skill — these arcade-like attractions are timing-based. To start there will be four different types: Cuff-A-Cur, The Moogle’s Paw, Crystal Tower Striker, and Monster Toss (which some may recognize as reminiscent of Final Fantasy VII‘s “Super Dunk”).

Gold Saucer Active Time Events, or “GATEs” will be a prominent feature in the Manderville Gold Saucer. These mini-game style FATEs will be of several different types. One is luck-based as you must find a safe spot to stand before Typhon appears and blows you away — disqualifying you. Where his snorts will blow seems to be completely random, but if you’re left standing you will split the reward with any other contestants left.

Others involve rescuing a chocobo chick that has climbed to a high position — while bombs drop on you to knock you off the platforms as you ascend. Think of it as something like a platforming mini-game. There’s also a “Simon Says”-like GATE in which you must match a NPCs emotes perfectly. Another, pictured blow, will have you scouring the Gold Saucer for a NPC with certain features, though it can get tough as the differences may simply be varying muscle tone.

Of course, Manderville Gold Saucer points can be used to redeem lots of prizes — including various vanity gear not limited to a Setzer-like gambler’s coat and a bunny outfit based on the attendees that work there. Rare mounts such as Adamantoise and Fenrir are also some of the prizes you can earn.

The Manderville Gold Saucer is scheduled to open on Tuesday, February 24th as part of Patch 2.51.
