“There is perhaps no other video game series that constantly reinvents itself and dares to take on new things with each title it encompasses like the Final Fantasy series.” Twenty-nine years now and this description which is commonly used to describe what separates Final Fantasy from the rest of the video game franchises still holds true. More than ever, the series has taken bold, significant steps for this generation, from announcing the remake of the most beloved classic entry in the series to the release of one of the most controversial titles in the history of game development.

This year especially consists a number of milestones, which can also feel as the final step for the series to finally usher into a new generation. Let’s have a quick look at the Final Fantasy titles that contributed to this achievement and were in the spotlight for 2016.

FINAL FANTASY XII: THE ZODIAC AGE

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, Final Fantasy XII‘s HD remaster was officially announced for the PlayStation 4 during last E3. Promising to relive the journey of reclaiming the Kingdom of Dalmasca from the hands of the Archadian Empire in an overall enhanced experience befitting for the PS4 environment, we will finally get to experience its International Zodiac Job System version, offering a myriad of new gameplay features for the players.

WORLD OF FINAL FANTASY

World of Final Fantasy‘s release was a vibrant and adorable celebration of the series and its fans. Featuring the twins Lann and Reynn and their journey through the land of Grymoire, the game offers a nostalgic experience through the appearances of some of the most memorable characters in the series who help the siblings in saving the world, as well as its return to a classic turn-based gameplay.

FINAL FANTASY XIV: STORMBLOOD

Continuing the epic adventure in Eorzea, a brand new expansion was announced for Final Fantasy XIV under the title of Stormblood. The city-state of Ala Mhigo can finally be explored as players try to regain its control from the Garlean Empire. Multiple new jobs are promised to be revealed in a future date, along with a revamped battle system, a new level cap, and more; Stormblood will offer content which will be comparable to the size of a standalone game.

FINAL FANTASY XV

Noctis-Promo-FFXV

This year marked the release of the latest mainline entry in the series, Final Fantasy XV. That alone should prove 2016 as a busy year for the series, but it was more than that: it marked the end of Versus XIII‘s controversial development and the release of the final title in the Fabula Nova Crystallis compilation (even though it’s no longer a part of it).

XV wasn’t only an important milestone for the series, but also for Square Enix themselves and the Japanese gaming industry. Its release served to prove not only the series as a valuable competitor in the AAA forefront of gaming but it also represented the industry’s capability in outputting games that can still compete with the West. Versus was considered as an image of the industry’s difficulties during the last generation in game development, and to finally see it successfully release as a fully fledged game since its announcement a decade ago is a great achievement and sign in and of itself. From now on we can just fondly look back at this long, troubled, but worthwhile journey of Noctis and start looking forward at brand new things the series will continue to offer in the coming future.

FF 30th

2017 will mark the 30th anniversary of the series, a year worthy of a grand celebration. We know that Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age and Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood are due for release next year, but it’s not unrealistic to speculate and expect more big things in what’s to come. Next year will be the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII, a fitting year for the remake to return to the spotlight and enter full promotion. Perhaps we might even see Dissidia HD finally get officially announced for consoles as the title was used for the series’ 20th anniversary and is in fact already in development. Finally, as with tradition and with the latest mainline, XV, finally released, it is only natural to start wondering about the next numbered title in the series. Thinking about the possibility of XVI could be arguably exciting or too soon for some people, but the fact that we can finally discuss it in more realistic terms is telling enough that the series finally entering a new era. VII Remake is happening after all, something used to be deemed impossible to see within this generation just two years ago. Whether we see some of these speculations or not, most certainly there will be a lot of exciting things to come in celebrating the series’ 30th, so let us embrace whatever it brings.
