Straight from the Fan Festival in Tokyo, director and producer Naoki Yoshida has revealed some of the amazing content to look forward to in the upcoming expansion, Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood. Without further ado, let’s have a rundown of the main announcements that will for sure fire your excitement up for the next expansion.
New Job: Red Mage
One of the two new jobs that will be available in Stormblood, Red Mage has been officially revealed. Its starting level is at 50, and its home has been confirmed to be located inside the locations of A Realm Reborn, unlike how it was with Heavensward.
Its combat style is reportedly quite similar as the Black Mage job’s, being a magic DPS. As with the job’s traditional appearance in the series, it will be a combination of melee attacks and red magic (a mixture of black and white magic). Red mages wield a rapier while possessing a crystal in their left hand.
New Transportation Method: Swimming and Diving
Increasing the game’s level of immersion, players are now able to swim and dive into Eorzea’s bodies of water (not everywhere though). As you can see in the screens, it’s possible for your flying mounts to dive with you as well. Swimming will be slower than walking, and the developers have confirmed that there will be no underwater battles. It is possible for your character to die underwater though, if they’re currently suffering from constant damage over time.
Players can swim in some areas in A Realm Reborn (notably in Costal Del Sol) and dive in the deep enough areas of Stormblood. It’s not possible to drown, and the developers are aware of how unrealistic it can be so they prefer for it to be seen as magic.
New Beast Tribe and Primal: The Anantas
A female dominated clan under the rule of the Garlean Empire, the Anantas are known for their prowess in the area of magic and craft in gems and jewelry creation. The new primal is strongly associated to this clan as well (first image), Lakshmi, Lady of the Bliss. We’ll learn more about her over the course of Stormblood‘s events.
New Raids: Omega Weapon and “Return to Ivalice”
Omega, the Bend of Time, will be an 8-man raid in the same vein as the previous high end raids, The Binding Coil of Bahamut and Alexander. More about Omega will be featured in the upcoming patch 3.5, and as with its predecessors it is separate from the main scenario.
As its title suggests, XIV plans to feature one of the series’ most well known universes, Ivalice, as a 24-man raid in Stormblood. Its story will be written and managed by none other than Yasumi Matsuno himself, the universe’s creator. Matsuno has described Yoshida’s design of XIV somewhat as the series’ “amusement park”, and his desire to add Ivalice was due to this.
Collector’s Edition, Theme Song and Release Date
It’s official: Nobuo Uematsu will return to compose Stormblood‘s theme song. It is currently 60% complete, and as with Answers and Dragonsong, it will be powerfully charged with emotion. Uematsu will be present in the Frankfurt Fan Festival.
The digital collector’s edition will consist of in-game bonuses such as Final Fantasy V‘s Syldra, the sea dragon and a Bartz Klauser minion. The physical edition’s content will have more special items such as its box beautifully designed by Stormblood‘s Amano logo, a figurine of Zenus, a book of the expansion’s illustrations, and a map cloth of Eorzea.
Ending the event with a bang, Stormblood has been officially announced to be due for a simultaneous worldwide on June 20th 2017. Pre-orders will commence on January 24th 2017. As commented in the presentation, the release date is subject to change.
