Final Fantasy XIV patch 1.18 adds Auto-Attack

June 14th, 2011 by Tony Garsow

An upcoming content patch for Final Fantasy XIV will mix up the game’s battle mechanics by adding  an auto-attack feature seen in most MMORPGs in the last decade. FFXIV director/producer Naoki Yoshida detailed more about it on the Lodestone today, as well as giving us a video to preoccupy us while the new patch takes an additional two weeks to complete. By the team’s own admission, the development schedule has been interrupted because of the after-effects of the Tohoku earthquake in March, and many updates are still scheduled for the summer months.

The Auto-Attack feature will allow battle classes to automatically melee enemies based on an in-game swing timer, getting rid of the game’s Stamina mechanic. That feature functioned as a constantly-refilling resource where player’s base melee attacks consumed segments of the gauge and required manual input similar to how the ATB worked in Final Fantasy XIII. Characters will also be able to switch between passive and active mode while moving around without interrupting movement.

Good to see the game continuing to improve. Heavily anticipating the eventual PS3 release.

I hope the game keeps improving. I’m sure it will be a good MMO by the time it’s ready for PS3.

I must say, the producers of the Final Fantasy games really disappointed me. I expected something much, much better than Final Fantasy 13 when it came to game graphics but it looked like it didn’t improve at all. The cinematic graphics improved but not the game graphics, style, and battle stratigo. I hope if there’s a Final Fantasy 16 that it’ll sure be much better than FF13 when it comes to story, graphics, and battle stratigo.
