Final Fantasy XIV at Nico Nico Chokaigi

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is at this weekend’s Nico Nico Chokaigi to present the game in a special cross-promotion with Windows 8. The team was on hand to talk about the game, including director/producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida. Yoshi-P’s stage performance included fusing with a Miqo’te to become “Yoshi’te”, the result of which you can see in the images below. There was also Final Fantasy XIV-themed cosplay, complete with the new default outfit designs by Kazuya Takahashi.

A Realm Reborn’s beta testing is currently in Phase 2 of 4. In Phase 3, which is safe to put in May, the PlayStation 3 beta will commence; Square Enix is working with Sony to prepare for this. In Phase 4, the team will shift to an open beta and begin testing PvP (Player-versus-Player) content. With regard to the upcoming release, Yoshi-P confirmed that the game will release this summer and simultaneously on PC and PS3.

The Final Fantasy XIV team also lifted the veil off two new Japanese voice actors that will be voicing key characters in the game. Yuuichi Nakamura (Cid Raines — Final Fantasy XIII, Trey — Final Fantasy Type-0) will voice Thancred and Shinnosuke Tachibana (Kristoph — Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume, Capel — Infinite Undiscovery) will voice a new character named Alfino. In our earlier report, voice-work for a new trailer was underway — that trailer is now scheduled to be released in the third week of May.

The development of a smartphone app as a companion to the game is also planned, and players will be able to check the online status of their friends and Free Company cohorts as well as check a database of in-game information including what items drop in a certain dungeon. A new soundtrack is also in the works, featuring music from Masayoshi Soken and Nobuo Uematsu.

The second day of the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn presentation will contain a panel with Yoshi-P and 2ch founder Hiroyuki Nishimura, and we’ll bring you any notable developments!

Update: The second day of presentations at Nico Nico Chokaigi has concluded: here are the highlights.

– The third (of four) beta testing phases will begin this June. This will also include the PlayStation 3 version of the game.
– The game will release this summer “when it’s hot”, perhaps ruling out September. They may be able to announce a date next month.
– In addition to 110 tracks by Masayoshi Soken, the game will have music by Nobuo Uematsu and feature a few tracks by Naoshi Mizuta after launch.
– The game will support AMD Crossfire and Nvidia SLI.
– A class that uses muskets (Musketeer?) will be available to players in the future.
– In-game weather reports are planned, but may not make it in for launch.
– Time limits (time attack) on dungeons will likely be reserved for Free Company ranking purposes.
– Minfilla returns as an important character.
– The team plans to release content post-launch on a quickly basis.
– Primals’ themes (background music) will be different but they may have the same motif.
– Phase 3 will introduce Level Sync, which will allow high level players to scale themselves down to do content at lower levels with friends. Stats on your gear will scale accordingly.
– Companions other than chocobos are planned, such as Magitek armor units.
– No Player Kill aka “non-consensual PvP”.
– Monks can chain together certain abilities to increase damage output, but there is a risk involved.
– Fat Chocobo will make an appearance in a post-launch patch.
– A salon is planned post launch where players will be able to change their apperance (i.e. hair).
– Players who buy the Collector’s Edition will get an in-game helm based off of the Warrior of Light in Final Fantasy — players who bought the Version 1.0 CE will also get this.
– Free Company headquarters will have multiple floors and members will be able to share items and gil with the appropriate permissions.
– Battle Regimen has become the Limit Break system. It will be available in Phase 3 but in a limited capacity.
– The smartphone companion app will be ready by Phase 4.
– The two second global cooldown may be shortened.
– Hiroshi Minagawa (UI designer) has revamped features of the user interface for Phase 3.
– The team is unsure if Cutter’s Cry and Aurum Vale will be available in Phase 4.
– Character progress in Phase 3 will be wiped when testing completes.
– Darklight gear will return for A Realm Reborn.
– The team wants to implement a feature on the new Lodestone where people can read up on the game’s lore as well as an in-game place to learn more.
– The Arcanist class will likely be debuted at E3.
– New informational videos detailing the game’s systems will come later next month around the time of the next trailer.
– Shiva is planned to be implemented after Ramuh and Leviathan.
– Opening videos for the city-states will have voice acting in Phase 3.

    Juicey info and yoshida as a manqo’te all around win

    Great to read that they are still planning to get the game out by Summer. However, seeing as the Beta seems slightly behind schedule and with possible further delays to come, I don’t see this launching until July/August.

    Also, for the record, Akihiko Yoshida didn’t design the new default costumes. They were designed by Kazuya Takahashi.

    @TheBadass That’s right, and I knew that too. Editing…

    Nice update on info. So the Beta Phase 3 will begin in June? This game is starting to look like an August/September release.

  • AnimaMagna

    Okay, so let’s get the releases straightened out. First, in late summer, there’s FFXIV A Realm Reborn, then in autumn some time there is Lightning Returns, then, probably near the end of the year, there is Bravely Default, then sometime next year, if the rumors are true, there’s Versus. Wow! Square Enix may have been flagging a bit in recent years in terms new FF-type games, but they’re making up for it now and no mistake. So what’s next? Type-0 port in Summer 2014 and FFXV in January 2015?

    @TheBadass
    I’m more seeing the late-July to August release. I don’t think they would want it to clash with Lightning Returns, which is out probably late-August to September.

    The reason Phase 3 is being delayed until June is because Sony hasn’t certified the PS3 beta version yet. Unfortunately, it’s not something Square Enix has any control over and I guess they’d prefer to launch the PC Phase 3 along with the PS3 beta opening like they said they would rather than splitting them up. For the record though, last time I checked in Japan autumn begins either during the last week of August or first week of September instead of North America’s September 22nd/23rd (depending on the calendar). Since the game is supposed to launch in the ‘hot months of summer’, July seems most likely.

  • TheBadass

    @AnimaMagna
    I think FFXIV ARR will release in August seeing as the Beta has been delayed. LR FFXIII is likely for September.

  • Tony Garsow

    @Ehren
    I don’t believe that’s entirely correct. Currently they’re in certification, but that’s not necessarily the cause of the month gap between phases. There have been some rumors floating around about that, but it might have been an erroneous or misinterpreted translation.
