Final Fantasy XIV Heavensward Expansion Revealed

October 19th, 2014 by Tony Garsow

Revealed at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival yesterday, Heavensward is the name of the game’s first expansion, which will release in Spring 2015. After showing a teaser trailer, director/producer Naoki Yoshida and English localization lead Michael-Christopher Koji Fox detailed what we can expect in Heavensward.

The two major themes of the Heavensward story are the 1000-year Dragonsong War that has raged between the city-state of Ishgard and the Dravanian Horde, and Thordan’s twelve Knights of the Round. We’ll be going to Ishgard proper in the expansion, as it will be the fourth city-state in the game, aside Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, and Ul’dah. It’s a city ruled by an archbishop and four noble houses, and the city is full of pious people that worship Halone, the Fury — one of the Twelve Eorzean gods the Scions revere.

Divided between the noble and commonfolk, the color palette of Ishgard is very muted and shows a lot of contrast between light and shadow — a different look then we’ve seen thusfar in A Realm Reborn.

Beyond Ishgard, and beyond and above the Sea of Clouds is where we’ll adventure to in the north — specifically the Dravanian Forelands, the Floating Continent, and other skyward locations. These areas were described by the team as “massive”. Airship accessibility is obviously important, so Free Companies will be able to band together and build them.

The level cap for all classes and jobs (including gatherers and crafters) will rise to 60 in Heavensward, with new abilities for existing classes. The team strongly hinted at one of the jobs being Dark Knight at the Fan Festival yesterday, but it looks like more details will have to wait until the London Fan Festival this weekend.

More Primals (based on classic Final Fantasy summons) will debut in the expansion, including a new one unique to the Final Fantasy XIV universe. Many, and the emphasis was on many, new dungeons will also be added — and new endgame raids similar to The Binding Coil of Bahamut and Crystal Tower in the works, said to evoke a strong Final Fantasy feeling.

A new race will be available to play in the expansion — the same Lady Yugiri belongs to. They have lizard-like features such as a tail, but their true appearance is still something of a mystery.

Final Fantasy XIV Heavensward will release in Spring 2015.

Does that guy already have a name? Because he really needs a name.

  • Tony Garsow

The community has dubbed him Derplander!

Who knows if he’ll ever get a name. ;p

  • It all looks great, it’s just a bit disappointing that we don’t get to cross over to Ishgard in the new path, rather we have to wait until 3.0…

It was mentioned that the expansion won’t be F2P. Do we have any idea what the cost will be? Cause if they charge us as much as the original game thanks but no, thanks!

  • Tony Garsow

We don’t know how much the expansion will cost yet.

New areas in most MMO´s is something that will be released I an expansion, not in a patch. So if you knew the way most MMO´s work, you don´t need to be disappointed at all.
