Final Fantasy XIV Beta Phase 1 begins Feb. 25

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn fans eagerly anticipating the start of the first beta phase need no longer wait for the start date confirmation. In his newest Letter from the Producer, Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida announced the first phase is set for Monday, February 25th. Players who have earned Legacy status by subscribing for three concurrent months of the previous game will have priority selection for beta until Phase 3.

Yoshi-P included more details on the first round of beta, including images from the FATE system and the Lv. 30 dungeon players will be able to group together to undertake. FATE (Full Active Time Event) are dynamic events that will put players in impromptu groups (no automatic partying, it’s up to you to actively participate) to complete a certain objective. In one FATE you might be battling a giant beast; in another, you will be defending a hamlet from an invading troop of beasts. Rewards are doled out for participating automatically, so it’s in your best interest to lend a helping hand! They’ll be simple to participate in, though the real challenge will be your collective effort to satisfy the FATE’s conditions.

If you played the original game at length, you’re probably familiar with the Behest system. If you were questing or hunting around a certain camp, a Battlewarden NPC would request aid to fight certain monsters on an hourly basis. Usually a party is needed to complete this objective. This system will return, but will be quite different than before. So much so that Yoshi-P is still tweaking what he has christened as the new Guildhest system. It’s scheduled to be implemented some time after Beta Phase 1 goes live.

Gladiator is being introduced for the first phase of beta, because the new Lv. 30 Dungeon will make good use of a class that learns tanking abilities. Yoshi-P assures us the boss of this dungeon will “give us a run for our money”. Gridania and the surrounding areas in The Black Shroud will again be the playground for Phase 1, with other city-states and zones to come in later phases. There will be some truncated questing content to accommodate this, as Yoshi-P detailed that you’ll be traveling around the world when you follow the game’s overarching scenario.

If you have yet to sign up for beta, you can do so by following this link.

    Exciting! My friend and I have a joint account that was Legacy status for quite a while before the old version ended so hopefully we will be involved in the early stages of the Betas. Mostly I would like to get my hands on that character creation. 😛

    The way this Beta test is going, I’m starting to think this game will release in July at the earliest. If that’s the case, I hope it’s playable at E3 2013 alongside Lightning Returns.

    Also, is it just me or do the graphics not look much different from Version 1.0? I think it’s the lack of detailed textures. I honestly think the graphics of this are worse than the first FFXIII. Looks like Crystal Tools is better at visuals than this ARR engine.

    Also, who drew the art in the OP? I don’t think it’s Akihiko Yoshida as it looks more like the style of Kazuya Takahashi.

    Can somebody please clarify?

    Still no Bravely Default ;_;

    @TheBadass
    Kazuya Takahashi

    Thanks! His art style is great but I’ve begun to see the subtle difference between his style and that of Akihiko Yoshida.

    Still waiting PS3 beta phase.

    @thebadass

    That’s because the graphics have been scaled down for better accessibility across a wider range of PC’s. In comparison to other MMO’s however, FFXIV still ranks the best looking MMO, and if you knew how taxing MMO’s were in general, you would understand that FFXIV is actually very good looking.

    There is good reason the graphics are worse than FFXIII.. because FF13 is not online, you don’t have thousands of people in one section of the game at the same time.

  • Ehren Rivers

    Yes, graphics were scaled down to help low-end PCs play it. Supposedly when the game is complete, the graphics will scale by your computer’s capability. If you have an amazing computer, you’ll experience the best graphics they can offer.

    As for how the Beta is going, they said sometime around mid-February was when their beta was going to start. It’s starting about a week later than I thought it would, but I think the really telling factor will be how the first bug fix break goes.
