  • Another TGS without any fresh-feeling announcements on SE’s behalf.

  • Honestly, anyone that expects anything different from Square Enix from now on should be considered narrow-minded. These people wouldn’t know good marketing if it hit them over the head.

I never liked The After Years all that much, but I will admit, the 3D remake looks cool. Glad to see that team get more work.

  • @alexsam

Are you implying they are beyond overall redemption?

  • AnimaMagna

I enjoyed the trailers to a degree, but I admit I was disappointed. I’m glad the full-blown LR TGS trailer we were expecting is coming Sunday. Bravely Default has got me interested (glad the “For the Sequel” version is the one the west is getting) But as to the others…

And by the way, if they had no grip of marketing (ie, promoting their games so they sell), they would have gone under years ago. I admit this is a little underwhelming, but I think it’s because it’s aimed at a different kind of market, not like the one we have in the West.

  • AntagonistGB

Eh, not really. Square has always catered to a niche. Around Final Fantasy 6 and 7, they did have a few good marketing campaigns, but beyond that, they’re actually pretty bad with their advertising and marketing. The reason they continue to sell well is, frankly, that they’ve been around for over 25 years now, and they’ve built up a fiercely loyal fanbase that’s willing to cut them a disproportionately large amount of slack.

Don’t get me wrong, I think they still make really good games here and there, but they’re nowhere near the powerhouse they used to be in terms of quality and marketing. Really, they’re only a powerhouse in name recognition at this point.

  • @Lilay Redemption? No, I guess that once they deliver the next FF, everything will be pretty much forgotten. They’re very cleverly using the fact that us westerners have a pretty small memory to their own benefit. So, as long as they give us both X/X-2 and LR within the next 4-6 months (and they end up being worth the wait), no one will complain, for a while. Plus a lot of ppl are happy with XIV.

@AnimaMagna I do understand the fundamentals of marketing, thank you very much. And although I will recognize that in Japan the handheld market is flourishing more than the domesticated consoles (though the reason behind that is beyond me -nothing will ever replace the experience you have of playing a game on a full scale TV, but anyway), I fail to understand the logic behind announcing something to the world when it doesn’t even exist! If they didn’t want us asking about Versus, or XV, or whatever they’re calling it nowadays, they should never have announced it until it was complete, or at least in the final stages of development! Yet they have chosen this path many times in the past and continue to do so even today (Agito). They have not learned from the financial problems of the past and I am very fearful for the future of the company that creates my favorite franchise. So in conclusion, yes that, in my opinion and by the company’s income last season, is bad marketing.

  • TerrorOfZanarkand

At least we got an extra sneakpeak on the XV,
The 3D (as stated earlier) looks alright 😉
I can tell by looking at this that I wont be seeing my friends
    Much in the coming year.

ANOTHER FFIV remake… what the hell? I thought I already bought the “complete” collection on PSP. Damnit.

    I don’t want to replay the game again..but I know I will… lol

  • rattyinc

They will bring the “Completer” FFIV collection to every single console currently out when they finish the after years.
