The Final Fantasy Series in A Realm Reborn

April 11th, 2013 by Tony Garsow

No doubt if you caught the aptly-named Letter from the Producer Live VI, you would have seen Magitek armor units marching across the wastes of (what I assume is) Coerthas to the tune of “Terra’s Theme”. The tease that came at the beginning of the live letter with Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn producer Naoki Yoshida. The MMO reboot isn’t limited to Final Fantasy VI references, but will feature a Crystal Tower (Final Fantasy III) raid, a Gold Saucer (Final Fantasy VII) attraction some time after launch.

The pantheon of Final Fantasy summons also return as Primals, and we’ll be expecting to see more of their bestial faces pop up in the future. While Ifrit and Garuda were introduced in instanced fights in Version 1.0, expect to see the likes of Shiva, Odin, and more. Even classic Final Fantasy bosses like Gilgamesh are due for a cameo.

For those of you who enjoy the nostalgic references to the series past in A Realm Reborn, what cameos or features would you love to see and why? Does the inclusion of too many nostalgic references drown out the game’s identity as a new Final Fantasy? Leave us your thoughts in a comment below!

I would like to see a Moomba cameo from FFVIII, maybe as a pet, a wild beast enemy or something.
Also would be fun to have in air travels the oportunity to witness the world under your feet, like you could do in FFXI.

In regards to the question about the lost of indetity due to excesive past references, i would say it’s no problem whenever they keep adding new fresh content and a bit of nostalgic references from time to time.

Agreed, as much as I love nostalgia and references…this game is becoming a desperate attempt for FF fans attentions :(

It shouldn’t be 14…more like Final Fantasy Online, or Universe or something else…

XI was great, sadly 14 isn’t and probably won’t be. MMORPGs are declining, specially with subscription models.

I hope IGN and Edge have something descent to say about this game after all the effort and money Square Enix have been putting into it. No wonder they are posting a loss.

And as for a cameo I’d like, maybe a dungeon with a mural or more organic version of the fal’Cie Anima. Lovely design.

I personally think this game has too many nostalgic references. Materia, Crystal Tower, Magitek etc. It’s cool, but kinda like a desperate atempt. But whatever, the game needs to be good in it’s own right with hopefully a good story.

@AgitoXIII I agree that they’ve gone too far to create an atmosphere filled with nostalgia for fans of the older series. However, it’s basically what everybody has been crying for, saying that the most recent entries in the series have been anything but what “Final Fantasy” stands for. For me, Final Fantasy means something new each and every time, so all of these nostalgic references might be a let down for me.

The core story of XIV was fantastic, with Dalamud threatening to destroy all life on Eorzea upon impact. Then, yet again… a reference to the past was thrown in and it was almost a bit of a let down to see Bahamut break free from within Dalamud.

I’m still looking forward to seeing what A Realm Reborn has to offer, and what their nostalgic references from Ivalice and XIII will be.
