Chocobo Raising Comes to Final Fantasy XIV

July 3rd, 2014 by Tony Garsow

chocobo

In Defenders of Eorzea, the third major post-release patch to come to Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, players will be able to further train their chocobo Companion through a brand-new raising system. Those with access to a Free Company estate and have one combat class to level 30 will be able to purchase a stable for their yard, where they’ll be able to interact with their steed.

Players can obtain a personal chocobo mount through their respective Grand Companies as well as summon them in battle. By acquiring combat experience, your chocobo can rank up (to a maximum of 10) and learn skills in three threes: defender, attacker, and healer.

Defenders of Eorzea will see the rank cap rise to 20, and by using a stable to train your chocobo, you’ll be able to utilize an alternate method other than combat to power up your Companion. Once a stable has been purchased and placed in your Free Company estate’s yard, members of the company can begin training provided they meet aforementioned requirements.

Chocobos will require a snack as a reward for training, and by feeding one enough of a specific type — such as Curiel Roots, Mimett Gourds, or Pahsana Fruit, they will begin to favor it. In combat, you can use that same snack to buff your partner’s capabilities. Keep in mind that the different types of chocobo feed can be obtained through gardening, and plots to grow various greeneries can be placed on your estate’s yard as well. Upon reaching Rank 10, you can feed a chocobo a Thavnairian Onion to increase its rank further. You will be able to train your chocobo once per hour in Earth time.

Taking care of your chocobo buddy is more than Pavlovian persistence, you’ll also need to get your hands dirty and see that your Companion’s stable remains clean. Keeping the stable tidy means that your chocobo will earn more experience in training sessions. A stabled chocobo will not be available to be mounted or brought into combat, a note to remember when out in the wilds.

Chocobo raising won’t be the end of chocobo-based content in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn — director/producer Naoki Yoshida has hinted that chocobos will have a role in the Gold Saucer, presumably in chocobo racing. Other forthcoming features include the ability to raise multiple chocobos and regrow their feathers in different colors.

Defenders of Eorzea, patch 2.3, will go live on Tuesday, July 8th. Watch the trailer here.
