Akihiko Yoshida Departs Square Enix

December 5th, 2013 by Tony Garsow

Character designer Akihiko Yoshida will be leaving Square Enix. Yoshida, most known for his character design on Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy XIV, Bravely Default, and more — leaves the series with a long standing legacy of memorable faces fans have been enthralled with for years. While Yoshida will be contributing to Bravely Second, a sequel for Bravely Default for the Nintendo 3DS, it is unclear whether he will continue work on Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn in a freelance capacity.

Update: Akihiko Yoshida will continue to work with Square Enix on the Bravely series and Final Fantasy XIV. In an update to fans on the Final Fantasy XIV forum, Yoshida says he will continue to create artwork for the games in the same capacity he has before. In a recent interview with Famitsu, he says the split was a formality in order to be able to contribute more creatively and focus less on other responsibilities within the company.

That’s to bad. FF T, FF XII, and Vagrant Story are some of my favorite games, XII being my favorite Final Fantasy. I’m sad to see him go, I hope this does not hurt chances of another mainline FF being set in Ivalice.

It’s so sad to hear this. I will always remember his work. One of the best char designer in the industry.

  • And they lose them by the numbers. Cute.

  • Tony Garsow

There are actually other Square Enix designers like Hideo Minaba that left the company years ago and still continue to work on their games in a freelance capacity. Minaba recently contributed to Lightning Returns and Bravely Default.

In fact, people were upset that Yoko Shimomura left Square Enix about a decade ago — and she’ll be the face of SEJ over the next couple years in FFXV and KH3.

Ultimately, it could affect very little other than a shift in Yoshida’s personal career approach, and it’s quite likely he is still interested in working with Square Enix.

  • That’s a very good point; I completely forgot Uematsu as well which, already quite detached from SE, still composed music for FFXIV. I suppose this could be a part of the contemporary manner of operation: creative teams are no longer a set of people confined to a particular building or even a sole room of one.
But there’s still a feeling of disintegration coming from these news though.

I’ve still got my fingers crossed Akihiko Yoshida will be the character designer of FFXVI, which will be directed by Hiroyuki Ito.

  • Well, that could happen.
