Square Enix Launches Dive In Streaming Service

September 8th, 2014 by Tony Garsow

Square Enix has revealed a new streaming service in Japan that will let you play both old and new games on your smartphone or tablet. Titled Dive In, players will be able to choose different tiers of price options for longer access to various games.

Starting with Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy VII International, and Season OF Mystery: The Cherry Blossom Murders, Square Enix will be gradually adding more games to the roster. Final Fantasy VIII and The Last Remnant will come in November, Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Murdered: Soul Suspect in December, and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII early next year.

An sample of Dive In’s pricing with Final Fantasy XIII:

3 Days = 250¥ + tax
10 Days = 510¥ + tax
30 Days = 1250¥ + tax
365 Days = 1800¥ + tax

You’ll also be able to play the first thirty minutes of each game for free, but you’ll need to make a Japanese Square Enix account.

The service is scheduled to begin on October 9th in Japan. You can read more here.

very interesting. I don’t see this leaving japan and I think touchscreens are the worst way to play rpg’s but still cool.

Yeah, Japan’s internet infrastructure is much more sound than here in the US – so I can’t see this service coming over here any time soon. The pricing, at least for Japanese consumers, seems reasonable — and Square Enix embracing a burgeoning mobile gaming market with different services makes sense.
