More Final Fantasy Ports for PlayStation 4?

December 14th, 2014 by Tony Garsow

Final Fantasy series executive producer Shinji Hashimoto made waves at PlayStation Experience when he announced a Final Fantasy VII… port — the PC port, that is, ported to PlayStation 4. While the news may have ruffled feathers with Final Fantasy VII faithful that a remake was in development, Hashimoto explains that it’s all in an effort to harbor greater accessibility to classic Final Fantasy games.

At a recent Sony venue in Shanghai to promote the console in China, Hashimoto told outlets that the PlayStation 4’s lack of backwards compatibility and limitations with cloud-based streaming was the impetus for Square Enix to port Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster directly.

Square Enix may have recently released DiveIn, a cloud-based system that will allow you to stream the company’s library to smartphones, but Hashimoto seems cognizant that other regions outside of Japan don’t have the infrastructure or the optimization to support a satisfactory level of service for all. Hashimoto elaborates that direct ports, through the PlayStation 4, are the best way to proceed — to create an ideal environment for the company’s aging library.

When asked about PlayStation 3 titles like the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy, which are currently being ported to PC, Hashimoto says that the company hasn’t considered them yet — though the logistics in doing so would require them to contract an outside team to get it done. (Note: a fairly common practice Square Enix has employed.) Many of Square Enix’s internal staff that worked on the trilogy have moved to work on Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XV.

It’s not hard to see why Square Enix pushing hard for the adoption of PlayStation 4 by fans. Final Fantasy Type-0 HD will release in March of this year, followed by an eventual Final Fantasy XV release. We reason that Square Enix wants everyone ready, if mostly to take advantage of a larger install base.

What classic Final Fantasy games or remasters would you like to see come to the PlayStation 4? Leave us your thoughts in a comment below.

I wish they stoped focus on ports but instead move forward to future titles.

Think they’ll put FFIX among those titles? More FFIX is never a bad thing IMO.

Has people asked Square about release more or all their games on the PC. If they are porting FFX to the PS4, then there are no reason it can’t be on the PC.

That would be awesome if they released VIII and IX for PS4 with enhancements. Unlike everyone else im actually looking forward to these ports.

there could still be a deal in place to keep FF X on PS platforms.

a company can do more than one thing at a time.

Then SE is more backwards then I thought, if what you say is true. There is no reason in this gen of console to have Final Fantasy only one system. If anything a deal could be that only the PS can have a physical copy of FFX and at the same time released on the PC.

O, I am sure that SE is doing more thinks at the same time. I am only worried: are they doing the good things?
