Lightning’s Cameo in Final Fantasy XIV Detailed

September 25th, 2013 by Tony Garsow

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy Go There campaign will bring a variety of cameos to several of the company’s Japanese-developed titles, and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is included. Previously announced earlier this year, Lightning will cameo in the game through a series of quests and FATEs that players can participate in. Appearing in her Final Fantasy XIII outfit, Lightning will fight alongside players against various FFXIII monsters — including the Bahamut Eidolon.

Other cameos planned for Final Fantasy XIV include a FATE and minion featuring Shantotto from Final Fantasy XI and Golems from Dragon Quest X.

During the presentation at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, the staff of FFXI, FFXIV, and DQX said that they would like to get these cameos in-game before the Holidays this year. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII releases on November 21st in Japan, which may provide something of a hint!

    What is this?! Is it XIII or XIV??? I’m so confused…

    @alexsam

    Seriously? Did you really just…

    When I heard them laughing, it was just such a shock, and I couldn’t help laughing with them. What a sight, Lightning in Eorzea: not sure whether this is just a nice cameo for the fans (and there are fans before anyone starts leveling their guns at me) or something potentially hurtful to Eorzea’s lore. But still, I seem to remember other games getting away with this kind of thing. At least it’s totally optional, unless you walk into it by accident.

    Absolutely disgusting

  • Keyln

    I’m sorry, but what’s wrong with this? It’s not like Lightning is taking over Final Fantasy XIV or something, but it’s something to bring a little connectivity to the Final Fantasy universe.

    @Keyln
    In my opinion, there’s a huge difference between a callback or a cameo that’s just harmless fanservice or a genuine attempt at creating continuity, and what this is, which is blatantly just cross-marketing FFXIV and Lightning Returns.

    I totally agree with AntagonistGB! This is a disgrace to the FF series! It’s one thing to just have references in each game about the previous entries (a buster sword here and there, a tiny bronco), all that is ok. But the minute that you actually get characters from previous games involved like this, it’s like you’ve run out of ideas. To me it’s like they desperately need to sell Lightning plus they don’t know what else to do with Eorzea so they figure “why not make a nice XIII+XIV salad?”. It doesn’t work that way. They should treat Sakaguchi’s franchise with a little more respect! I just hope that this is a FATE or a quest that you get to choose on whether you do it or not. Cause there’s no way I’m gonna have Lightning bouncing around in Eorzea!

  • Loffrey

    Yoshi-P said there WILL be a reason to see Lightning there, and it *IS* just a FATE, not part of the main storyline. Still better than Balthier and Luso in FFT. Heck, better even than CLOUD in FFT. It’s totally harmless.

    BTW, “Sakaguchi’s franchise?” Sakaguchi begun moving away from direct influence in the series early in Snes era, this statement is a bit unfair with other members of the staff that deservers credit. Plus, the franchise is not “sacred” and nothing they make in the future will make the previous entries suddenly disappear. Just chill! :D

  • John

    Well, its just a optional FATE so whats the big deal. Even though I like XIII games, I understand this seems a little forced and marketing another game. Still, chill out people!

    As for the Sakaguchi’s franchise, yes what he nearly destroyed. Thanks to him we almost didn’t get XIV or other games. I respect the guy but he is stuck into 90’s and cant produce any good games anymore. FF franchise either had to die or evolve, latter was a good choice in my opinion, but its debatable of course.

    @Loffrey
    The fact you and other people need to go as far off as FF Tactics to mention direct cameos paints a self-evident picture that SE is not on the business of blatant “fan-service”. That said, this smell of XIV in LR and, more particularly, of XIII in XIV is simply unwarranted. Sure, it harms no one, but it just stinks. It just annoys. It belittles whatever scope the producers wanted to create, regardless of what excuse they think sounds plausible, e.g, “reason (for appearance)”. And I don’t even play XIV.
    In a time when people seem generally unsatisfied with SE, these little things are good fire-starters for rants. It’s entirely predictable and understandable.

    @Keyln
    Not be condescending or judgemental, in regards to this type of speech and the people who make it, but for “connectivity”, try playing more than one FF game. Trust me, it’s there.

    Well, I guess you would have to be a little older and have been playing these games for a long time to see how totally unacceptable and boundary breaking this is. This is not a tv show! It’s supposed to be a game that maintains it’s own identity, despite the fact that it belongs to a major franchise. It would’ve made sense for Lightning, Snow or whoever else to appear in Type-0 or even XV, since they belong to the same universe (FNC). But I don’t even see the point in this (besides marketing of course). And the reason I call it Sakaguchi’s franchise (which it is, and nobody can ever change the fact that Final Fantasy is his baby) is that he would never resort to these kind of antics. While he was around, there was a lot of originality and he wasn’t afraid to try new ideas. Unfortunately, that led to his downfall. Anyway, since this is just a FATE, I won’t have to put up with it. Let’s just put this dark instance in FF history behind us and move on to greater things.

    I’m sorry, but if you don’t like it, don’t play it? It’s that simple. For me, it’s very justified. Both of these games are coming out within a few months of each other, and it’s understandable why they’d want to cross them over. Also, XIV is also features in XIII-3, so it goes both ways.

    On top of that, it’s not a required part of the game. You don’t have to dress your character up like Lightning or SNow, you don’t have to partake. It’s not taking it over.

    I am honestly really excited, and it just sickens me how people can call it ‘disgraceful’ and really, I just don’t understand any of the reasoning people are using to say it’s bad or awful.

    As for Balthier in FFT, maybe it wasn’t the most logical things (in terms of timeline) but it was really fun, and he was a really great character to have, so there’s no problem with it.
