Final Fantasy XIII-3 domain filing was protective

December 3rd, 2011 by Tony Garsow

A while back we got first wind of a new webdomain Square-Enix registered under “finalfantasy13-3.com” and the like, hinting at a possible trilogy. However, it is common practice for companies to file for such domains to protect their own intellectual property.

In the newest episode of Square-Enix Channel (Square-Enix’s Japanese podcast), a representative at Square-Enix Japan confirms that the filing is to protect the Final Fantasy XIII IP and is not indicative of a new title.

    I’ll wait and see what Kitase’s main series FF team announce as their next project after FFXIII-2 before I sweep this under the rug.

    Personally, going off what Kitase has been saying in recent interviews, FFXIII-3 will definitely be the next game by his main series FF team after FFXIII-2. There’s no way they’ll get FFXV out in only 2 years like they did with FFXIII-2. He also said they want to copy Call of Duty an Assassin’s Creed and those games use the same world and characters but just refine the gameplay. FFXIII-3 totally fits that ideology.

    @SQEX_Me
    Wouldn’t that game be Versus? I mean, a modern world with refined gameplay… Kinda sounds like Versus’ back cover.

    If I see a XIII-3 before a FFXV announcement, Ima personally SWIM to Japan and kick every employee of SE ass.

    Is it me, or has SE become so obsessed with sequels and spinoffs that they’ve virtually abandoned the main numbered series? Can anyone remember when the next FF game was just one number higher than the last one?

    Also, IP isn’t something that needs to be “protected.” That’s just big companies showing their inability to move beyond putting fences around culture. Imaginary property is a construct designed solely to benefit middlemen and gatekeepers at the expense of actual creators and the public. Plagiarism is the common excuse for such restrictions, but laws already exist to handle plagiarism. Copyright is not needed to address that—and in any case, it doesn’t even now. Only distribution and reproduction, which when not hindered by copyright’s restrictions does no harm and actually has been shown to benefit that which is copied and distributed by increasing its exposure.

    Someone on KHI’s forums posted a quote from Andriasang, stating the reason behind Japan Square Enix’s mentioning of XIII-3 on the radio broadcast. It mentions that the US SE office made the trademark and that the JP SE office had no knowledge of it.

    Here’s the quote:
    “The reason the name was suddenly brought in this installment of [Square-Enix's] radio broadcast is that one of the show’s hostesses, voice actress Asuka Nishi, had apparently been asked by Square Enix to help promote XIII-2, and she decided to do so by contacting Ofuji, who was on business in France at the time. She pleaded with him to let her have a voice role in XIII-3, which she said she’d heard about on the internet.

    “Ofuji’s response was that he himself had first heard about the domain name on the internet. The name was registered by the US office without knowledge of Square Enix Japan.”

    To:Axwind really really remember when we gotten a FF title every other 2 3 years and yeah a number over the other and when X-2 was anounce, i couldent believe it and it was the only game SS did as a sequels before they turn to SE.

    anyways XIII-versus seem’s like a another 2-3 years from now.
