Director Toriyama talks XIII and XIII-2

July 26th, 2011 by Tony Garsow

With Final Fantasy XIII-2 approaching this winter, many Final Fantasy fans in Japan and abroad are wondering what the team behind XIII-2 is working on for this title given the criticisms behind the first game. Director Motomu Toriyama and Producer Yoshinori Kitase chatted with Gamasutra about what players can expect to be change from the original title. When asked about the criticisms of Final Fantasy XIII, Toriyama replied:

We actually set out with a concept for XIII-2. Our ultimate goal is rectifying every single point in Final Fantasy XIII that has been criticized by the users. The main criticisms, I suppose, were: one, it was too story-driven and therefore was quite linear, and, two, that there weren’t that many towns and cities to explore, and also that there was no matching interaction between the player and the gameplay.

We actually took those criticisms very seriously, and you’ll notice that we tackled them completely and thoroughly. This new game is more player-driven, as opposed to story-driven, so that you can explore different locations and fields to get information and explore towns and other types of locations, as well. So we are very determined to rectify all of the problems, and we think we have.

Good. Now how about more characters to play other then Cheesy ass Noel and Serah?

This is all too little too late, IMO.

FFXIII-2 is a spin-off game and nothing more. They messed up the proper main series FF. All this stuff they are now saying was already realized by the team that made FFXII. All they had to do was copy the map structure of FFXII and fill it with their Kitase-style story and art direction.

Fan-service. This sums up Square-Enix and their products nowadays. I guess with Japan’s economy being worse than America’s, even SE doesn’t want to risk producing anything that fans might dislike. This unfortunately puts a cap on something that should never be capped – creativity. And as long as the economy is shabby, there will be little to no innovations that have any kind of monetary risk. An ugly truth, but money’s a fickle master.

But seriously though, release more info on other playable characters already.

Just can’t get excited about this one…

Sounds good. Looking forward to what they do with the game.

From what we’ve seen so far, they haven’t fixed any of those problems…

I guess FFXIII is just one of those games where you either love it or hate it. I loved it, and can’t wait for this one! I don’t even care if they don’t tackle those problems as much as they said they did because i have absolutely no problem with them in the first one at all.

I completely agree with lalik. I LOVED FFXIII and I’m really excited for FFXIII-2. Yes, it was different than most of the other main series titles, but I thought the battle system, story, and graphics were awesome.

awwww yeh can’t wait for this.
