ASA upholds UK FFXIII 360 commercial ban

August 18th, 2010 by Tony Garsow

b_ffxiii_protobattle_0The Advertising Standards Authority of the United Kingdom has upheld a ban on a commercial for the Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII. This ruling comes several months after the release of the game, in which this commercial (below) is alleged to have the PS3’s footage and gameplay instead of the 360’s. Square-Enix maintains that the gameplay is from the 360 version but the FMV sequences are unedited and for trailer use rather than taken from the PS3 version. However the ASA counters that the ads are misleading about the quality of the product.

Square-Enix says that compressing the HD quality of the FMVs into SD format would make PS3 and 360 versions “indistinguishable to the average gamer” in these television ads.

This isn’t the first time that Square-Enix has had trouble over how it’s presented the 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII. In the closing months before FFXIII’s domestic release, Square-Enix replaced the HUD of the 360’s version with PS3’s gameplay. Square-Enix later apologized for the “mistake” and released true gameplay screenshots of the 360 version.
