Final Fantasy XIII-2 details in this week’s DPS

October 11th, 2011 by Tony Garsow

Final Fantasy XIII-2 director Motomu Toriyama and producer Yoshinori Kitase sat down with Dengeki PlayStation for an interview entailing some of the new things we’ll be seeing in the game, including DLC. What we’ve learned is summarized below:

Summon Raid
When defeated, monsters will crystallize in battle so that they are usable by your party. Each monster has a specific rate when it comes to crystallization, and some will be more difficult to collect. You can set a monster into a Paradigm based on the six Paradigm Shift roles available to your party. Paradigm Shift in battle and the monster will change to one that fulfills that role. Cactuar is an example of a COM monster and Cait Sith is an example of a MED monster.

There are rare monsters to collect, and there are currently more than 150 that you can use for Summon Raid not including DLC. Monsters will grow along with your party, and some are described as something similar to “early birds” or “late bloomers”. They’ll learn new abilities as they grow.

Synchro Drive
Monsters have unique combat styles, including their Synchro Drive sequences in which players input commands like a Quick Time Event. In order to do this, you must build up a Synchronization gauge below the monster’s health bar. We’ve been told in previous interviews that Synchro Drive sequences will have varying levels of difficulty to execute.

Snow Villiers
As we’ve seen, Snow is sporting a new outfit and hairstyle. He’s been looking for Lightning for Serah although he believes that she is dead. We learn through this interview that he has been living with Serah for two years after the events of the original game, but they have not yet married.

Caius & Yeul
According to the interview, Caius is the strongest (in terms of abilities) Final Fantasy antagonist in a comparative sense. You might recall that this was said about Lightning in the lead-up to Final Fantasy XIII, in that she would be the strongest protagonist of the series. Caius has an important connection to Chaos Bahamut, the beast Lightning is seen fighting in Valhalla. Yeul, the girl that is accompanying Caius, is a very important character. She is traveling with Caius for an important reason.

DLC Schedule
Producer Kitase comments that players can expect new DLC once or twice a month, containing several different items. However, just because you download it doesn’t mean you’ll get it right away. You’ll have to unlock it in the game first after you download it by meeting certain requirements. An example of this would be the Omega monster pre-order DLC from Amazon. Purchasing it will add the boss encounter to the game, but you’ll need to crystallize it to have it join your party’s Summon Raid.

The same idea has been applied to the rest of the DLC. There will be different costumes and weapons that you’ll be able to see in cutscenes, and the team is currently working on these to make them look good. Kitase mentions that the cost of the DLC will be appropriate for the items you will receive.

So does this mean that Caius is stronger than sephiroth?

  • lalik

Everything sound good to me. I can’t wait for this! I already pre-order before the bonus were release so I guess I’m getting that alt form for Serah.

  • lalik

^I meant before the bonus were revealed. =)

Well like Silverfang im wondering if dude is stronger than Sephirotlol Also im not feeling this DLC, Ounce or twice a month is making me feel like im not getting a complete, & if it turns out its actually on the disk & needs to be unlocked via DLC purchase, well I cant see myself buying any of it. :/

  • AntagonistGB

They’re just saying it to make the game seem more X-TREME! Comparing the power levels of the series’ various villains, all of which are capable of destroying the world, is asinine.

  • lalik

@AntagonistGB Yeah I agreed with ya man. There’s many FF villains out there that are very strong. Like Kefka at the end of FFVI. He was like a god.
