Final Fantasy XIII-2 battle system details

Final Fantasy XIII-2 director Motomu Toriyama and battle director Yusuke Mutsui revealed more about the game’s battle system in this week’s issue of Dengeki PlayStation.

The Paradigm Shift system is intact from the previous installment, formerly named Optima Change in the Japanese version. One change to its mechanics is that each shift will be instantaneous. If you recall, the first shift of each battle in Final Fantasy XIII changed one character at a time. To increase the tempo of battle, this change was made. Your Paradigm Shift configurations can now also be saved in the menu.

Boss encounters may be more difficult in the sequel, and the team has created a specific algorithm to deal with players being at different levels of growth. This will provide a level of challenge, even if a player out-paces the difficulty of the campaign. Boss encounters will have different camera work than enemy encounters, to give the fights more gravitas.

    Hmm. So the leveling cap from XIII was removed (the one for the chapters), and they’ve made it so the foes still present a challenge. Sounds cool. I was quite the fan of FFVIII (though it wasn’t my favorite. Hippie or no, Selphie seemed too shallow).
