Motomu Toriyama hints at third FFXIII game

June 20th, 2012 by Tony Garsow

Recently released in Japan, the Final Fantasy XIII-2 Ultimania Omega included interviews with the game’s staff including Yoshinori Kitase and Motomu Toriyama. In regards to the scenario DLC “Requiem of the Goddess” featuring Lightning, Toriyama made the following comment:

“Like how Lightning took a step in the secret event… I think I want to take another step forward on this project of ours.”

    I love the XIII universe. I think a FFXIII-3 would be awesome! 😀

  • Phantom Roxas

    I loved the mythology established with the original game, and while I haven’t beaten XIII-2 yet, I know it has an infamous cliffhanger. I would love to see a Final Fantasy XIII-3, but not now. Let them finish Versus XIII first.

  • whmsyrup

    that would be awesome! It would be nice to have Lightning as the lead character again, although I personally prefer playing as Serah.

  • ghost

    Please let her be playable, I was disappointed with F13-2 when that didn’t happen

  • Ezbeon

    Yes! I knew this was happening way before XIII-2 was out Love it!

  • LordGfet

    NOOOOOOOO, where is my versus XIII?

  • AgitoXIII

    Absolutely disgusting. FF used to be a series that finished it’s story in ONE definitive game without the need of multiple sequels. Now SE released a game that didn’t have a comprehesive story, so they make a sequel that’s has an terribly plot and nothing to do with the original, then have it end with a blatant cliffhanger just to make a “XIII-3″.

    This franchise has gone to hell and I want the REAL FF series to revive itself.

    XIII-3 can and will burn in hell.

  • KaRaOh

    Screw the haters!
    :) looking forward to it.

  • Set

    Oh my god. Square-Enix, please, stop torturing us with your crappy stuff and stop insulting Final Fantasy saga too.

  • dan hibiki

    Toriyama’d again.

    FFXIII didn’t needed a sequel (let alone two), it was an outstanding game by itself. Only Toriyama needed these sequels because he can’t stand haters, but he’s just spoiling this series’ storyline and credibility.

    R.I.P. Fabula Nova Crystallis, your only hope of salvation is Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Maybe in 2057.

  • AgitoXIII

    @KaRaOn

    My question for fans like you is, if a “XIII-3″ STILL didn’t conclude the story, what then? A “XIII-4″? or 5? An animated series?

    A XIII-3 would basically make part 2 irrelevant.

  • NecroMage

    And to think at one point I dreamt of working there….
    *shoots self in face*

  • fonzyboi

    Looking forward to this. @KaRaOh : you’re right. screw them haters 😛

  • Gexus

    It’s an insult to the fanbase to just continue on with making another game based on the second game’s cliffhanger. A third sequel in the series of games based on a game that wasn’t very well received, except by the media which was bedazzled by the pretty graphics and free games from Square-Enix :)

    You people shouldn’t just accept this. Making 1-2 games is more than enough. What’s so great about Final Fantasy is that ONE game is enough to encompass a whole story line, instead of making up stuff as they go (for example: “Oh look! Something’s wrong… MUST BE A PARADOX!”) just to milk more money out of the loyal fan base.

  • Shadowcatdoll09

    Yes! SE please let FFXIII-3 be like FFXIII with the main characters (Snow, Hope, Sazh, and Noel playable and not monsters please.) Btw for all the people whininig about FFvsXIII blame the Kingdom Hearts staff they’re the ones working on Versus not Toriyama.

  • GlowingMouth

    Obviously those looking forward to the next sequal (and possible prequal) do not grasp the true understanding of a good FF game.

  • Dy

    @AgitoXIII

    Let me start of with, I normally don’t ever reply to any comments on websites. Especially FF related, but I can’t let this slide.

    FFXIII-2 was trying to appease all of the hate FFXIII got. GIve people that they said they wanted so don’t BITCH about it.

    Also, you seem to have no understanding of how the video game market works now.

    DO you realize how many CoD games are released that sell like hot cakes?

    Do you realize that the development and time cost to make a game like FFXIII is much higher and much more expensive then CoD?

    Square-Enix wouldn’t be able to make games anymore if they did start doing expanded game Saga’s.

    GOing forward you’re gonna see FFXV and FFXV-2 and so on. They need to be able to re-use their resources on their games.
    Just like sports games, Mario games, ETC. ETC.

    Yes, the fact that they USED to do something completely new each time was amazing, but it’s simply impractical now.
    It’s easy to make something new when designing a character takes one guy and a night of ramen to draw up some 2D sprites.
    Or even do basic 3D models like Cloud with simplistic colors and so on.

    Now they have to make sure they are designing fully functional clothes that adhere to proper physics, different shades of hair color, ACTUAL hair designs. Make up, teeth, etc. etc. It’s a whole new ball game.

    And Square-Enix is and has been releasing plenty of throwback to the old school days as well as re-makes of the older ones. They are giving you what you want while also trying to move forward.
    JUst quit getting so butt hurt, seriously.

    For a huge budget JRPG that already is catering to a niche in the market, the only chance for survival while continuing technology forward and aweing us they will HAVE to do sequels. There’s no way around it.

    They are all extremely talented people and it’s a business. One which they are at a market disadvantage but they are doing everything they can to maintain themselves and keep people happy.

  • LordGfet

    Square…why can’t you listen?

  • Azuardo

    Very well put, Dy.

    I’m a fan of XIII/-2, so I’m happy for a possible third game, especially if it makes them some easy money and means they can then deliver those big games in the long run, like Versus and XV, even if they do take years to come out. Granted, XIII-2 sold poorly, but it must have still brought in some profit? Must be hard to deliver such high quality JRPGs that fans demand with all the detail and tech and money required to produce them nowadays.

    Forget about that, though. I want to know if there are some high quality scans around of this Ultimania. I want to see those Lightning sketches in detail!

  • Bekas

    Loved both XIII and XIII-2 and, considering the last ended, I had been waiting for this; it was not a matter of wondering if it would happen, it was a matter of when it would happen. Seriously, you cannot have an ending like XIII-2 and leave it there.

    Considering that the team that would work on this has nothing to do with the team working on Versus, I’m all for them starting to create XIII-3 soon.

    Lastly but not least, Square cannot please all of their fans; that’s unrealistic. It’s okay to like the XIII universe and it’s okay to dislike it as well, as long as we can be nice about it. There’s no right opinion about this so let’s agree to disagree, okay? Okay.

  • friend

    @Dy: That kinda of going a little bit extreme. Are you a developer, or something to with business? Why only aiming at AgitoXIII? (Poor Agito I feel Sorry for you)

    AgitoXIII didn’t even referred to reusing assets or graphics related and he might of exagrated alot on ff13. Most haters (included some of the general ff fanbase) hates the direction of which ff13 (series) is going, so basically the plot, characterization, and features not the graphics or the designs (even thought there are few who have these aspects). Even some of the haters buy the game for different reason other than the direction it went to. There is an another ascept to final fantasy other than graphics, innovation and gameplay that fan are looking for ie a good plot.

    Again, you seem to think he is aiming for other ff games. SE is a big company, so there are different team making different game, it not the same team making different games. Ff13 (series) is success in term of sale, but it failed to acheive certain ascept from different type of ff fanbases.

    Even though I agree about models, physics, animation and etc will take a long time including different type of testing involved. Some company will do preplanning before deciding if the team want to reuse assest or create something new. Agreed that even toriyama’d and kitase wanted to do something similar to COD.

    I for one, like the ff13 series as a game in terms are music, art design and gameplay, but hate the confusing story with no magic like feeling.

    There could be a ff15-2, but you would never know and it could have different art style and not using the old models. You fail to mention ff10-2, ff7 comp. and some others. Please don’t compare ff with different franchise totally unrelated.

    Type 0 changed the name to avoid the blacklash from ff13. This one game isn’t hated like ff13. Guess what Type 0 might get a sequel, since it was a big hit in Japan and the fanbase seem to like it more than ff13.

    The main thing: There will be haters for some games, it could be ranging from few people to alot. So stopping one, will not help you stopping others. So I guess if you don’t like, it is wise to ignore them, instead of possibly make into flame.

  • dan hibiki

    Friend got the point.

    At the end, FFXIII’s main problem lies in it’s name, and now I’ll explain you why. Sorry if i make mistakes, I’m not an english speaker.

    1) It is a good game in terms of gameplay and graphics, but fails to give an epic story such as it’s predecessors leading many old fans to complain, me included. Let’s get real…fal’Cie? Focus? Cocoon? They’re nothing more than strange words put there to make te story look complicated, but the game itself doesn’t explain anything about them. The datalog does. Since when you needed to stop playing and READ to understand a Final Fantasy game? In the other games, you’re not given full knowledge until needed, you have firstly to make experience and get used with the world, then you discover the plot little by little (for example, in FFX, Tidus came from another world and the party was constantly filling him on what was going on and about the context of Spira). In FFXIII, you’re suddenly thrown into the main story with little to no explanation of what the hell is happening. You wanna know what a fal’Cie is? Read datalog.
    This storytelling style may be good for some random-average-fantasy-game (that is actually what FFXIII is), but does not belong to a Final Fantasy. The story in itself may be some kind of good, but never becomes “epic”.

    2) The characters are overall stereotypes who make little to no sense. Let’s take Lightning as an example: she’s trying too hard to be some kind of badass but does not have anything in terms of personality, failing to look realistic. And Snow, he’s just a shounen hero-wannabe.
    Again, this kind of characters may be good for an average game, but NOT for a Final Fantasy.

    3) Everything about the battle system. I will not go into that in detail now, someone likes it (me included), someone does not. But you should agree if I say that this gameplay have nothing to do with Final Fantasy, or even with RPGs in general. You never control you characters, you just “watch them play” and act as their own. There is no customisation, no side-quests, no conversable NPCs. Heck, you can’t even level up anymore if the game tell you so. There is nothing wrong with playing a game like this, but then you’re NOT playing an RPG.

    For these and other minor reasons I say that FFXIII may be a good and enjoyable game, as long as we don’t consider it a Final Fantasy. If it were to have another name, it would have spawned his sequels quietly and we wouldn’t be here arguing about that.

    I hope that Agni’s Philosophy will keep that name.

  • AgitoXIII

    @Friend
    Thx but I don’t need u to feel sorry for me, I can stand up for myself and i’m about to.

    @Dy
    Oh dude you so full of bull. First off, knowing how the video game market “works” doesn’t have a goddamn thing to do with continueing to make a series in the way it was intended to be. And that’s for the most part ONE comprehensive story that doesn’t need a sequel.

    And how in the dear lord’s name do you personally know SE’s financial situation so well that you know that they MUST make sequels to FF games OR THERE GOING BANKRUPT. Oh, that’s right YOU DON’T. So STFU. Your not SE’s personal accountant so you don’t know spit.

    I’m sure SE can figure out as a major company how to go forward producing games. Heck SE really doesn’t even NEED to keep making new engines and so forth. They could just keep the tech they have now and expand it to have larger worlds and keep making FFs that way and make $$$ If there all great games, then word will spread and gamers will buy them.

    And the fact that you came from the future and already predicted that FFXV will spawn a sequel is amazing and disgusting at the same time. Can you tell me who my future wife will be as well?

  • xolia

    Looks like we’re getting a little too heated here… =/

    Anyway, this is great and all, but I’d like to know more about Verses or maybe even something about FFXV. I’m getting a little tired of the remakes, ports, and sequels to preexisting games.

  • rabbi

    Oh god….SE if you really want to do your freaking FF XIII-3…. please for god sake get versus done first….. Man… I had nothing against FF XIII it was a good game, maybe a bit linear…as said before…. but the ending was really satisfying! but then the sequel came… and yeah FFXIII just went downhill there….

  • TheLastFantasy

    Ok…. real talk people…. this is getting a little ridiculous now. Continuing on a series of games whose storytelling was so dry and boring, and characters who were all stereotypes (Except for fang….she was awesome, too bad she couldn’t save FF13) and frankly wasn’t well recieved by fans. Then you try to redeem yourself by making a 13-2 (But you can’t because your not tesuya or sakaguchi) And that one sold half of what 13 did….. and had practically nothing to do with the original story, and also another one that wasn’t recieved by fans well storywise. So why continue on with probably the most disliked FF game, not only that but one that not so much people care about…. I’m really hoping this is a movie instead.

  • Dy

    @AgitoXIII

    You said, “Absolutely disgusting. FF used to be a series that finished it’s story in ONE definitive game without the need of multiple sequels. This franchise has gone to hell and I want the REAL FF series to revive itself.”

    – So I’m basically pointing out that what you’re asking is impractical and it just isn’t going to be the way they can do things unless FF starts selling as much as every Madden NFL or CoD game.

    AgitoXIII – “Oh dude you so full of bull. First off, knowing how the video game market “works” doesn’t have a goddamn thing to do with continueing to make a series in the way it was intended to be. And that’s for the most part ONE comprehensive story that doesn’t need a sequel.”

    If by “intended to be” you mean what your original post was saying, that it should be like back in the day when FFV, FFVI, etc, were all singular games with no sequels needed to finish the story.
    That is not going to be the case with SE’s current big budget games unless they condense their games to being around 10 hours long.
    BUt this isn’t just an issue with SE alone. A lot of major developers are running into budget constraints on their AAA titles.

    AgitoXIII – “And how in the dear lord’s name do you personally know SE’s financial situation so well that you know that they MUST make sequels to FF games OR THERE GOING BANKRUPT. Oh, that’s right YOU DON’T. So STFU. Your not SE’s personal accountant so you don’t know spit.”

    SE is a publicly traded company and if you have stock invested in them you get internal business updates. As well as all the other publicly listed financial information. I also have a good friend who is sometimes contracted to work with SE. And I definitely hear about when they are late in paying him.

    AgitoXIII – “I’m sure SE can figure out as a major company how to go forward producing games. Heck SE really doesn’t even NEED to keep making new engines and so forth. They could just keep the tech they have now and expand it to have larger worlds and keep making FFs that way and make $$$ If there all great games, then word will spread and gamers will buy them.”

    Well yes, that’s part of the point I was making before. They need to re-use assets instead of making every numbered FF game a completely original title or they need more space in-between the releases while they use their assets to make spin-offs. Versus, Agito and so on.

    AgitoXIII – “And the fact that you came from the future and already predicted that FFXV will spawn a sequel is amazing and disgusting at the same time. Can you tell me who my future wife will be as well?”

    Well I’m happy that I can amaze. The only way there won’t be a FFXV-2 is if they end up doing episodic DLC or something along those lines.
    Yes, I can tell you. You will not have a future wife.

  • AgitoXIII

    Thanks God. Now I know not to waste time with women anymore.

  • friend

    @Dy PLEASE would you STOP, for love of humanity. This is very disrespectful. I don’t want to any more flames war between u and other people.

    FF series are rpg series not EA sport nor shooters COD. Square ENIX is not the same company that follow the same standard as EA or COD.

    Your just only aiming against AgitoXIII without reading other people reason and they have good point. Ff12:reverant wings didn’t reuse any resources (not even graphics) from ff12 other then ideas of settings, character and skills were reused. I absolutely agree with dan with one, read my previous post before tackling mine.

    Well this Japan company make sequel/spinoff based on reception from the world and sales. SE can release the same game again in japan may add new stuff and label it is as special edition, like international version for ff series. Then they do preplanning process to decide either reusing i.e ff13-2 or creating something new i.e ff12:rw. I am business and software programmer student. I know some through research like interview, official book.

    How will you know is ff15 will be a hit and give a sequel?
    Another option is They may create a different game maybe ff17 in, while the another team does ff16.

    Again agito is refering to ff13, and you misreading his first post? It a technique called read the whole paragraph not in parts and reading between the lines.

    @DY PLEASE STOP!

  • someone

    @friend: Why should Dy stop? Agito’s throwing flames just as heavily, and if he’s allowed to toss insults, Dy should be able to reply.

    Personally, I think I’m rather glad so many people are distraught over this. Developers aren’t even creators of fun anymore; their business is as serious to us as that of our governments, going by the way we react. Just look at you all. So irritated, so peeved. When was the last time you truly had fun with a game?
    One by one, your favorite developers lose their way, because games aren’t fun anymore. They’re deathly serious. So much so that we can’t let other players form their own opinions on them. If they disagree with us then damn them! How dare they!? Don’t they realise they’re diverting attention from what WE want? And if they wind up satisfied, and not us, then by God, it’d be no different than them stealing the air right from our lungs!

    You’re making enemies with each other over non-existant universes that don’t affect your live in the slightest. This is what games do now.
    Oh for the glory bygone days of Mario, Sonic, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, eh?

  • meep

    You people are so petty…and tiny.

  • dan hibiki

    @someone

    Maybe THAT’s the reason why we can’t enjoy a game anymore, we’re all blinded by our nostalgia for the days of Mario, Sonic, Crash and Spyro. We’re acting like those old geezers always complaining about everything. What a pity…

  • Dy

    I was only trying to defend the FF franchise and point out how some fans have unrealistic expectations.

  • xolia

    @someone:

    (clap, clap, clap)
    I’m glad someone (no pun intended) pointed all of that out.

  • friend

    Alright, just ignore the some fans that u don’t like, by getting rid of one fan, there will be more to stop. Ignore is the better solution and live a happy life.

    ALL he wants is a better ff game than continuing on ff13. Trust me, he been longer here than me, even before xiii was released. End of discussion.

    There are some game that ruined by failing general fan’s expectation ie. banjo kazooie’s last game on x360 & the 3rd birthday (most plot related for this one, gameplay was awesome) are obvious examples. There are some game in a franchise go beyond general fans expectations ie. mario galaxy (mindblowing moment).

  • Tony Garsow

    Alright guys, I know this is a popular topic, but let’s try to discuss differences of opinion without personally attacking the person behind it.

    It’s ok to have strong opinions, and I encourage that you guys post them here, just make sure you lay them out in a way that makes you look intelligent and respectful rather than condescending or belligerent others.

    Thanks. :)
