11 Years of Final Fantasy XI

May 16th, 2013 by Tony Garsow

Believe it or not, it’s been eleven years since Final Fantasy XI originally launched, marking the first MMORPG entry for the franchise. First revealed at the Square Millenium Event in January 2000 (seen above), the game has blossomed into one of the most successful online RPGs since. Five expansion packs, including Seekers of Adoulin in March, have marked transformation on the world of Vana’diel as the game continued to evolve alongside its community.

Whether you’re a first-timer or a veteran looking to return to the game, you can currently get the Final Fantasy XI: Ultimate Collection Seekers Edition for Windows PC and Xbox 360. For Steam users, you can currently download the collection for $29.99, it includes every expansion pack and add-on scenario in the game’s 11-year history.

The community team has a wealth of events planned, you can learn more by following the links below:

The Eleventh Adventurer Appreciation Campaign

FFXI…. Epic game. Flawed, but epic in it’s own way nonetheless. Not played in 2 years ish. Said I’d come back when an actual new expansion came, and probably would if ARR was not around the corner and I could actually get a good connection to play it on.

I played FFXI back in 2005… Have a very good memories of this game. I remember over all things the beauty of Vanadiel’s world places, like Khazam, Jeuno City or the Ronfaure forest. I used to play a sandorian elvaan, Beastmaster+White mage, but in the 6 months or so I played, I only managed to max my main job to 35.

I quitted this game because of this, the extremely difficulty for leveling alone and the lack of solo content even for leveling, but in general, I liked this game and still keep the box for my FF collection as a precious treasure. Thought several times of returning, but then I remember that level up soloing is a pain and forget about it.

    Happy birthday FFXI!

FINAL FANTASY XI Is epic!! it’s still going after all these year’s and i started it back in 02! Great memories!

I still don’t get why this and XIV are numbered titles. should have just made a “Final Fantasy Online” game or something like that. I wonder what Tony thinks…

  • masterlobo

Sorry Ezebon but FFXI is really great once you try it, even plot-wise. It is a true FF game. I don’t see why it can’t be numbered. Who said numbered titles were exclusive to single player titles?

I do, however, agree on XIV…because it’s an outdated model for 2013. I fear for it…it may damage SE so badly it may never ever repair.

I think if you take the time to get in invested in FFXI you’ll definitely feel that it’s worthy of the Final Fantasy name, even as a main series title. I feel similarly about FFXIV.

  • its hard to believe i’ve been playing this game for almost 10 years.

and its been steadily evolving over the years. if i had to make a prediction 10 years ago i could never have imagined the game would have come this far.
