Final Fantasy X/X-2 Announced For N. America

March 22nd, 2013 by Tony Garsow

Final Fantasy X producer Yoshinori Kitase took to the official US PlayStation Blog to officially announced that Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD will be released on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita this year. More than ten years since Final Fantasy X’s launch on the PlayStation 2, the game and its sequel receive new life on the PlayStation 3 in HD and upgraded visuals.

Around 10 years ago, I was given the privilege of taking on the role of Producer on FINAL FANTASY X and FINAL FANTASY X-2. Just in time for PAX East, I am excited to announce that FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD Remaster will be coming to North America this year for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita.

I invite you all to once again join Tidus and Yuna as they combat the colossal menace known as “Sin” to bring about lasting peace to the world of Spira – all in gorgeous HD!

I’d like to thank the fans for supporting FINAL FANTASY and all of our efforts throughout these many years. We’ll be sharing more information and updates in the coming months, and we invite you to stay updated on all things FINAL FANTASY X and FINAL FANTASY X-2 through our official website and Facebook page.

The official website is located here.

The official trailer is now live! Check it out by clicking here:

Cool! These screenshots look sumptuous, and the figures all look so realistic compared to their old models. Go Square Enix!

  • alexsam

Not to be a hater or anything, plus I realize how much Square-Enix has on their dish right now, but did it seriously take them 2 years just to re-do their hair?? The only pic that looks any different is the one with Tidus! Anyway, let’s wait till Monday for a final verdict on this thing… I at least hope it releases before Lightning Returns!

  • Lulu’s rack seems smaller :\

can’t wait for the announcement trailer

  • AntagonistGB

I can’t tell if the picture quality is just grainy, or the textures on the hair are really bad. Seymour’s in particular. I mean, I know there’s only so much they can do with his design, but it doesn’t even look like hair. It’s just a hot mess of blue lines and dots.

Also, I like how Wakka just has that stupid grin on his face despite the fact that they’re about to kill Seymour. The default faces just look so dopey, it makes me laugh.

  • lalik

What? Is it only me who noticed that the graphics HAVE improve? lol

  • Tony Garsow

    The graphics have improved considerably.

  • AntagonistGB

They cleaned them up, but honestly the only effect it has is showing the age of the models and the, in my opinion, pretty bad art direction. Also, the hair textures just look bad, judging by these screens.

After seeing tidus in color i actually really like his new look :)

  • TheBadass

I hope they give FFXII the remaster treatment.

  • Matheusfbp

Don’t you think that the graphics have been held back to accomodate PS Vita’s capabilities? I wonder if this were a PS3 exclusive the graphics would be comparable to FFXIII’s…

  • Bekas

For the graphics to be comparable to FFXIII, they’d have to remake the game.

Everyone’s looking good though, especially Lulu. Yuna too, in the lake scene.
Still, I maintain my position and say that I’m still not exactly fond of Tidus’ face revamp.

It’s like Square Enix doesn’t know how they want Tidus to look, considering his old face and then Dissidia’s and now this one…

  • Matheusfbp

It feels like they’ve gone far in improving the graphics but they could’ve gone even further without much more hassle. For example, I’d like to see more depth to Yuna’s and Lulu’s hair beads. Also, it would be nice to have some hair movement, instead of helmet hair, like on Yuna’s screenshot, crying by the lake. But on the other hand, I feel impressed with the graphical improvement, despite those details. They have improved it so much that it feels like this is a full remake! Now, I still wonder: has making this title available on ps vita held back the possible improvements?

  • Matheusfbp

I also want to say that I feel so excited for this!! FFX was my first FF ever and the one that has left the fondest memories on me! This will be epic!

  • firado

On most of it agree with bekas! @Bekas: Your right about that remaking it. Actually depending on the design of the game (like how is it made/structured) graphics can he remade/revamped as seperate part/component instead of remaking the the entire game. There are some games that anyone may name that remade/revamped only the graphics while keep most of the other components roughly the same. An example is Loz:oot was remastered port, but most of the graphics were revamped(see. iwata asks on nintendo done by grezzo) leaving most of other components the roughly intact. So models, updated art/rendering style, and texture from graphics side are updated or remade in some games.

@Matheufbp: Yep your correct, it not simple touchup like other remaster or enchanced ports. This could consider a bit a graphical remake even though it not level of ff13. To answer you question:
for first one: Highly unlikey, but I see your point. SE is best known for graphics in game. It could be possible.
second: If could be possible, so i’m sure if cross play feature then yes could held back some feature or earlier release. Another reason could they didn’t have enough people work around the time it was announced.

By looking at this game this is not a simple touch up graphics like other remasters like okami or mgs hd collection. Yay S.E. actually updated and (some are remade) the models and textures.

  • firado

loz:oot for 3ds, not the other version just to be clear

  • alexsam

Well, it’s easy to make the mistake to compare these graphics to what we’ve seen from FF XIII and say that they don’t look that good. But from what we got from the original edition of this game, I’d have to say that it does look better after all. I’d like to see them in action though, and I’m also curious if they changed the look of the menus. I really can’t wait for the return of Auron’s badassery (one of my fave characters in the franchise) and to hear that awesome Uematsu track from Zanarkand. Brings back so many memories…

  • UndeadNecroMage

*suddenly remembers all of Tidus’s awkward and unnecessary movements in X*
    LMAO, I can’t wait!

  • gmoyajp

i think X was alright the way it was, noting to change unless they plan to added new features.

the ones that need treatments are psx era ones that’s what i want to see.

hope to see what new beside the graphics.

  • Anon

I think the graphics look amazing, if you guys were really expecting XIII level graphics, I’m sorry, but your delusional! You guys aren’t the ones working on this so you don’t really know how hard it is to do this stuff. They are clearly working hard and it shows. I think it is a HUGE step up especially with that comparison shot! And I really don’t have an opinion on how Tidus looks, he’s not our design, so they can do what they want and it’s not that dramatic of a change in my eyes.

Anyways, I haven’t seen it mentioned, but are we getting the international versions of the games or just the US versions? Would suck if they kept that exclusive to Japan.

  • Ehren Rivers

    It’s the International versions.

  • hutch

No major changes. Def. not as good as the ‘Ducktales’ remaster. Ha ha. But it’s looking good all the same. I’m glad they’re doing both parts. I was worried they wouldn’t-b/c despite all X-2s flaws I still believe it has the most satisfying ending in ANY FF. As someone else mentioned, I’m glad Tidus’s character looks closer to his cutscene self, but will Yuna’s model keep consistency from X and X-2???!!!?

  • peggy

it looks great, I really cannot say how excited I am for this. I hope it comes out soon!

with all this focus on hair updates, will we actually see Yuna with bed hair in Djose? haha, I always loved that part :]

  • AgitoXIII

Bad models? Bad art direction?!!?! Are you effing crazy? I replayed this game about 3 years ago and it STILL looked fantastic. And the art direction for X is unique and amazing. It has such colorful designs. I don’t think there many (if anyone) who aggrees with that crap.
