Final Fantasy VIII PC Gets Japan Release

May 15th, 2013 by Tony Garsow

In addition to Final Fantasy VII International (May 16th), Final Fantasy VIII will be released in Japan for PC. Like Final Fantasy VII, the game was originally ported to PC by Eidos in the late 90s. This week’s Famitsu provided the scoop, and announcement is expected at some point for North American and European release.

Earlier this year Final Fantasy VII PC was released worldwide through Square Enix’s online store, but originally, rumblings of a Steam release for both titles were hinted. The re-release featured a cloud saving, which also displayed stats on a website where players could effectively “boost” their HP, MP, and Gil to maximum for those looking to enjoy the story. For those looking for a challenge, Square Enix included a healthy amount of achievements.

Final Fantasy VIII fans and PC enthusiasts, what are your thoughts about a forthcoming release? Leave us your thoughts in a comment below!

More cash grabbing from a company that’s desperate not to go bankrupt. They haven’t learned a thing.

  • Daniel Masterson

I’ll be excited when they announce a U.S. release date.

  • AnimaMagna

If any of the fifth-gen games deserve an HD remake, it’s this one. Maybe then they can fix some of the story faults and plotholes, and maybe make Squall and Rinoa’s romance a little more meaty.
@AntagonistGD: Square Enix is far, far from going bankrupt. It may have suffered a substantial loss in the lat fiscal year, but it was by no means a company-killing loss when compared to their assets and stockpile of funds and shares. And they have several major moneymakers on the way over the next year or so.

What I liked about FFVII PC re-release was the upped resolution of all character’s models. Ok, the background (that is pre-rendered) didn’t benefit from this and still looked jagged.

  • TheBadass

I hope they port FFIX next. I’ve always wanted that game on PC with hi-res backgrounds and character models.

  • alexsam

Classic game. I’ll be really happy when both this and IX get the HD remaster they so deserve.

  • gmoyajp

heck yes, hope it comes to steam, haven’t Replay it in a decade!! steam yes plz!! i be keeping on eye out.

  • Elverin

Glad, that my favorite Final Fantasy VIII isn’t forgotten. I hope someday Square-Enix will do a full remake of Final Fantasy VIII, or at least remaster it with HD models and backgrounds, so it would be worth giving money for.

  • Odine

I bought the playstation network (for psp) a year ago, and also have the original Playstation 1 release, so I’m not interested in more copies. But I suppose it’s good news for people who haven’t played it in a long time.

  • UndeadNecroMage

Well, I’ve got it for my PS3, but maybe I’ll get it for PC. I’ve been wanting to try my hand at PC gaming for a while now, so maybe this’ll be the tool I’ll experiment with.
I kinda liked how the PC version of VII made interactable objects stick out more. I thought they faded into the background too much on the TV. Maybe VIII’ll get the same treatment.
I’m really looking forward to the GFs, though. Veterans like myself never use GFs due to the poorly balanced ‘damage vs casting time’ that other commands do better later on, but regardless I still think VIII had the coolest looking summons and it was nice having access to them immediately.

Now they need to patch the PSN releases with the achievements 😛

  • Feels like years have passed and still nothing interesting from square-enix.

  • Many thanks for another wonderful write-up. Where else could everyone wardrobe type of information in that fantastic technique of creating? I’ve a speech a few weeks, exactly what for the hunt for this kind of information and facts.
