Chronicles of Artnia: FFVIII Artwork Exhibit

April 12th, 2013 by Tony Garsow

Set in front of Square Enix’s office in Shinjuku, the Artnia café is themed around the company’s many video game franchises including Final Fantasy. A premiere dining destination for Japanese fans and those lucky enough to travel abroad, the menu includes moogle-stamped flapjacks, and an assortment of Final Fantasy-themed sundaes and cocktails.

Artnia doesn’t only serve your stomach, but your desire to see some rare pieces of Final Fantasy paraphernalia up close.

Starting yesterday and continuing through the 24th of this month, Artnia is hosting an exhibit of Final Fantasy VIII artwork by Tetsuya Nomura. This includes character and monster design, as well as a few storyboards from the game’s many cinematics.

FF-Reunion writer Aibo visited Artnia yesterday, and brings us the spoils. This includes rare character concept artwork of Squall and Nomura’s drawings of Guardian Force Griever and arch villain time-sorceress Ultimecia.

hoping to get some news on FFVIIIPC for steam. hope it dose come soon.

Final Fnatasy VIII had some really awesome artwork. I dig it.

I’ve got to say, this was probably the height of Nomura’s career for me. All of his work for VIII was just phenomenal. X and X-2 were also great, but it feels as if he’s lost a bit of his touch since Kingdom Hearts came into place and altered his style so much. I’m still a huge fan, but I’d love to see some artwork like this from him once again.

Even XIII and XIII-2’s artwork is a far cry from this.

This was before FFX came along and Nomura went totally insane. He used to have stylized, but relatively down to earth designs. Then… Tidus and Lulu and Seymour happened.

  • Tsukiru

Well, Final Fantasy X and X-2 were meant to be that way, as that world had many varied races and cultures. I don’t think the art for the games was bad though. I can think of some fantastic pieces, such as the dual Yuna and Tidus artwork where they’re opposite each other. It’s probably one of his best pieces.

After Kingdom Hearts, however, his style changed drastically and went from being more realistic and simplistic to overly stylized and anime-esque.

I think it worked better for Kingdom Hearts than it did for Final Fantasy. I liked his designs for XIII, but I do wish he’d tone it back on the crazy anime flair a bit. His Dissidia artwork was brilliant, though.

  • HNNNGG… the things I’d do to attend this.
I’d go crazy if I could get my hands on an original FFVIII piece.

Did they ever display any other FF title artwork? Or are they starting with VIII?
