FFVII, Tactics on display at the Smithsonian

May 5th, 2011 by Tony Garsow

The Smithsonian American Art Museum will be displaying videogames from a span of forty years as examples of the medium as an art form. The exhibit named “The Art of Videogames” nominated many titles from different eras, allowing gamers to then vote on those nominees for which games in different genres should go on display. Final Fantasy I, VII, Tactics, X, and XIII were all nominated for their respective eras in videogame history, with Final Fantasy VII winning the “PlayStation Adventure” category and Final Fantasy Tactics winning the “PlayStation Strategy” category.

The games are on display at the museum until September 30th, 2011.

Well, there was Final Fantasy Tactics too.

Final Fantasy VII may have been voted in out of sheer fandom, but I think as a representative of the franchise -as an art form- it’s a good choice. Given that it was the first game in the series to use pre-rendered cinematics to enhance the player’s experience is notable and praiseworthy even if it is circumstantial. It was one of the games that helped pave the way for further experimentation with cinematics in videogames, and the artistic design of the experience.

One can only agree with Tony, as in a broader sense what is considered in these selections are the evolutionary aspects of each game/era.
    Regardless of fandom.
Otherwise, it would just be giving an opinion on an opinion.

  • it”s a very hard playing and it”s beautiful artistics
