Famitsu interviews Square-Enix about Sony

February 16th, 2011 by Tony Garsow

This week’s Famitsu also had a brief interview session with Square-Enix director/character designer Tetsuya Nomura and Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase. The two were questioned about their and Square-Enix’s relationship with Sony Computer Entertainment Japan in the past, present and future.

Yoshinori Kitase was asked what the development environment during Final Fantasy VII was like.

“It was an atmosphere where more and more hardware that could support 3D CG graphics was emerging. Recognizing the novelty of SCE’s hardware, that the times were changing, that this was a critical point where the established methods for RPGs were changing, [we thought]: ‘Will this really be okay?”

He also comments that because Final Fantasy VII would be taking the series in such a fundamentally new direction, the team often wrestled with the idea of incorporating elements of the first six Final Fantasy games or abandoning them altogether. By challenging themselves, they were able to create a game that merged 3DCG movie cutscenes with gameplay seamlessly. The team created the opening CG-to-gameplay transitional scene that begins Final Fantasy VII to determine whether they were capable of creating a game to their aspire to their goal.

Tetsuya Nomura was asked about his thoughts on the NGP and Sony in this week’s Famitsu. Nomura cites Sony Computer Entertainment Japan for making collaborations on current and existing Sony platforms conducive to a good development environment. SCEJ officials spent a lot of time visiting Square-Enix [on current projects] and listening to their demands and were very patient. He considers his contacts at SCEJ invaluable for further development on titles for their platforms and Sony seems dedicated to pushing the hardware and technology envelope.

“Keeping our connections [with SCEJ] will allow us to create great things.”
