Type-0 director talks localization challenges

November 2nd, 2012 by Tony Garsow

It’s been over a year since Final Fantasy Type-0 released in Japan, and fans abroad have yet to hear any thing definitive about a localization or not. The game’s director, Hajime Tabata, was recently interviewed by Gamespot’s Jonathan Toyad about his body of work including Type-0. In regards to the current situation about the game’s localization:

Jonathan Toyad, Gamespot: Will FF Type-0 be localized for North America and Europe? If so, when?
Hajime Tabata: Due to market reasons, we are taking a clean slate in terms of our plans. We feel strongly about bringing this title to the fans in North America and Europe, so if an opportunity arises that can become a conclusive factor, we are prepared to go into consideration right away.

Tabata’s comment echoes what even some fans have acknowledged as an increasingly sluggish market for handheld games outside of mobile devices from Apple, for example. Note that Tabata implies that Square Enix seems to be re-evalutating the localization prospects all of its recent, current, and upcoming titles — so decisions may be forthcoming for titles such as Bravely Default: Flying Fairy too.

I dont understand why they cant just port it to the vita.

  • Cody

    @Rube
Apparently the Vita didn’t do good enough to justify a PSV release.
I would do anything to get this game on any console at this point, but SE is being so stubborn about releasing it because of the market.

  • AgitoXIII

I wonder if SE should consider porteding it over to PS3 and upscaling the game for big screen? I know it would look strange to have a game on PS3 with PS2 graphics release, but at least it’s on a current gen system that’s not in the rut that the Vita seems to be in.

But then you have to consider all the english voice acting that has to take place for the game’s seemingly large cast of characters. It looks like this game will come out the same time as VersusXIII. 2015?

But AT LEAST SE has finally given us a statement on what they think about the situation.

  • Skip the English voice acting and bring on the subtitles.

  • Azuardo

Second the subtitles comment. Just sod the English acting and sub it. They could be determining the best platform to port it to — could be the 3DS, since it’s doing considerably better than Vita. But there have been some touched up PSP ports to PS3 in the past — Monster Hunter. I don’t care what platform it comes on, or if it has English voices or not. They just need to release it. I’m sure they will eventually.

@Azuardo that would be impossible because there is also the factor of the menus. There is a lot of translating to be done but that’s not even the case here.Though it would be nice to have this game here in our territories it just seems right at the moment to not do it. Sq-En has so much on it’s plate right now that they probably don’t have time for a gamble such as Type-0. We might see it, in the future, after all the rest of their projects are done, which is exactly why I think they’re not totally “shutting the door” on a localization. But for the time being, it seems highly unlikely.

Pretty much what Agitoxii said that what i expect!!

If it is port to the ps3 and psV: I really hope se kinda updates on couple of stuffs, so not just being only upscaled game. I want atleast some content updates, like model update, atleast SE known for graphics. I’m impressed with kh 1.5 hd remix.

But most likely if it ported it will be upscaled version.
