Tabata Comments on a Type-0 Localization

In the two years that have elapsed since Final Fantasy Type-0‘s release in Japan, fans abroad have been clamoring for confirmation of the PSP title’s localization. Square Enix has been mum on the details, but in a new interview with USgamer’s Jeremy Parish after the announcement of Final Fantasy Agito, director Hajime Tabata explains the situation behind the long wait — and the possibility of their future plans with Type-0:

“Yes, it will definitely be localized. Obviously the release of Agito factors into this decision, but it wasn’t just that. I now hear from the subsidiaries that Type-0 is something that they really want released in their regions. With Agito coming out — Agito coming out is a certainty for North America and Europe — the subsidiaries’ opinion was that releasing Agito without having access to Type-0 would not be the best idea.

Well, let me modify this statement a bit. [Type-0’s localization] is in the final stages of consideration. It’s definitely the direction that we want to go in. Nothing is absolutely concrete right now with release dates or anything like that. But it’s definitely something that we want to do. Really, the primary motivation behind wanting to release the whole experience would be all the support and passion and enthusiasm of the North American and European gaming community that has reached out to us and asked for it. I feel very thankful, very grateful for that enthusiasm.”

Tabata also confirmed that Type-0 wouldn’t be re-worked for mobile phones and that the title was “designed for a handheld environment”, implying we may see a release on Sony’s handhelds — the most likely candidate being the PlayStation Vita. Tabata has earned his bread and butter developing on handheld devices and feels comfortable developing “flexible and intimate” games on them. Previously, Tabata directed Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and The 3rd Birthday, both of which debuted on the PlayStation Portable.

In addition to a producer role on Final Fantasy Agito, Tabata has taken up the co-director’s chair alongside Tetsuya Nomura on Final Fantasy XV. Many of the staff that developed Final Fantasy Type-0 have followed suit.

Horray, it looks like we’ll be able to get Type-0 and Agito after all. That was always my fear, that either neither would come over, or only Agito would come over. But if it’s this close and Square Enix feels it’s safe now, we may just get it. Also, I looked at the interview and there’s some interesting personal insight into the Fabula Nova Crystallis series.

So what, they thought making a game that has that big production value wouldnt have “enthusiasim abroad??
We will get this game its just a matter of when.

I don’t understand how giving the go ahead for a PSN release is taking so long. Hopefully someone told Square Enix that they shouldn’t forget about their fans outside of Japan when they create new games ie. FF Type-1(-2), Bravely Default 2.

On a side note anyone here ask SE about Drakengard 3 being released in NA and EU? That is a game that needs to be released outside of Japan.
