Square Enix Legend World’s Crossovers Galore

March 15th, 2013 by Tony Garsow

For Square Enix Members in Japan, Square Enix has cooked up a new browser game features and amalgam of franchise crossovers — including Final Fantasy. In the above trailer you can see characters, outfits, and monsters from Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers, and Final Fantasy Type-0 to name a few.

This isn’t limited to Final Fantasy, as Deus Ex: Human Revolution‘s Adam Jensen (who probably didn’t ask for this) makes a stealthy cameo — as well as the King of Hell from Army Corps of Hell. The browser game pits players against various monsters to level up their abilities and includes many of the social game gimmicks seen in titles like Bravely Default: Praying Brage and the upcoming Kingdom Hearts χ[chi].

Square Enix Legend World is currently announced for Japan and a Members account is required to play.

    Judging by the prevalence of FFXII and Vaan in this trailer, I can only guess that Hiroyuki Ito is involved in this game. The man has truly been moved the mobile/browser game division.

    I believe one of the “courses” or “features” is one that is Final Fantasy XII-themed — one of many that this crossover-themed social game boasts.

    I don’t think that necessarily implies Hiroyuki Itou is attached, but his current project (if he is working on something) is still a bit of a mystery.

    It should also be noted that there are many people at Square Enix that contribute their talent to make Final Fantasy games the way they are. I try to avoid some of the “hero worship” trappings that tend to give people a misleading sense of quality just because x name is attached.

    @Tony
    Don’t you find it strange that this new IP from SQEX is using FFXII too much? There’s the FFXII stage, Ring Wyrm monster, an avatar dressed as Vaan, an avatar dressed as Ashe, Vaan’s Quickening and even a special gift to do with Vaan mentioned at the end of the trailer. FFXII was released years ago and there’s no FFXII HD on the horizon. Therefore, why is this new IP attaching itself so much to FFXII? Why not FF Versus XIII or even FF Type-0, Lightning Returns or A Realm Reborn?

    I can only speculate that somebody that was deeply involved in the development of FFXII is attached to this project. I think that person is Hiroyuki Ito as he co-directed FFXII and has been MIA from consoles but active in mobile/browser game scene.

    As or your last point, I agree with you. People were hyped for FFXIII as Kitase was attached to it and yet look at the reception the game received upon release? Specific developers do not guarantee success.

    I’d hazard a guess that Hiroyuki Ito condoned this and had minimal involvement, though the fact it uses mostly FFXII assets fascinates me.

  • Ehren Rivers

    I didn’t see the person dressed as Vaan, but unless my translation is very off the ‘special gift’ is the card that allows your character to use the Pyroclasm skill as seen in the video. I noticed several other XII-related things though, like the Cactoid and the Bat. I did also see a lot of Bravely Default and Final Fantasy III stuff, so that’s exciting for me personally.

    I’m curious to see what the full scope of this game is like. I suspect that the final mixture will be a little more equal in terms of materials.

    I think it’s more coincidence than anything. Despite the Crystal Chronicles assets used, I’m not inclined to say Akitoshi Kawazu is involved.

    @Tony
    I’m inclined to agree with you. After all, Theatrhythm used a variety of characters from various FF games but that didn’t mean the directors of each of the FF games were involved.
