Still More Surfing: Zombies Are a Thing Now

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Zombies are no stranger to the videogame-o-sphere, and the influx of zombie survival games (as well as zombie movies, zombie television) it’s a fad that hasn’t entirely worn out it’s welcome yet. Yours truly took advantage of a Steam deal to check out Dead Island this recent holiday, and my neglected copy of Undead Nightmare for Red Dead Redemption got some overdue attention.

While playing these games, I couldn’t help but think what this sort of genre would be like in a Final Fantasy setting. (I get the image of Lightning & Co. fighting off hordes of Cie’th in some-such fashion.) Spare the blood, guts, and general macabre and it might just work out!  Whether the burgeoning zombie game sub-genre is pleasing or pernicious to your tastes: consider the idea of a Final Fantasy game of this type.

I’ll await your spirited responses.

But in the mean-time, we might entertain ourselves with the possibility…

Still More Surfing: Just One of Those Days…

Friday, December 30th, 2011

We’ve all had those moments: times where we’re ready to give up when a setback is thrown our way. Yours truly is no stranger to this, having suffered through the loss of a memory card (and the multi-hundred hour Final Fantasy XII save that came with it) and misjudging the number of lightning strikes you’ve evaded in the Thunder Plains. 199… Dammit.

It’s moments like these that burnout can set in, especially with games like Final Fantasy that have so much content to experience. Ultimately, after lessons are learned, I try to get back in the saddle and pick up where I left off to finish everything. It’s rather rewarding, don’t you think? Have you ever had moments like this? If so, share them in our comments below.

Today’s video was seen on YouTube user SnKouli‘s channel, playing the Japanese version of Final Fantasy XIII-2 that released earlier this month. It seems that this game is also no stranger to punishing hubris.

Still More Surfing: People of the Other North Pole

Monday, December 26th, 2011

Another Christmas has come and gone, and while yours truly is concocting some sort of unholy mixture to kill this awful hangover, the show must go on at Final Fantasy Network.

One of the most frequent questions I’m mailed or asked is where and when that HD version of Final Fantasy X will show up. You might recall the announcement by Square Enix’s executive producer Shinji Hashimoto at Tokyo Game Show in September of this year.

Since then, the folks at Square Enix have been mum on when we can expect to see it. Information was a no-show at Jump Festa a few weeks ago, a likely venue to show off a new trailer. It’s more than likely we won’t hear more until 2012 has worn out its welcome. (I’m hoping soon, judging by all this silly end of the world talk.)

However, in the mean-time, we should enjoy a modicum of nostalgia to keep our appetites sated. The following video is a masterful piano arrangement/performance by YouTube user Gestriden, featuring the songs: “People of the North Pole”, and “Seymour Battle” from Final Fantasy X. Happy Holidays!

Still More Surfing: Sororal Trombones

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

While Final Fantasy XIII was largely about Lightning’s quest to save her younger sister Serah, the roles have been reversed in the game’s sequel. Serah must set out with Noel to find her sister, seemingly erased from the history. Little does she know of Lightning’s new role in the grand scheme of things.

The following video by YouTube user KadeshFlow features a new twist on Serah’s Theme, composed by Masashi Hamauzu.

As a reminder, if you’d like to send us a video to be featured in this segment, feel free to email me!

Still More Surfing: Good King Moggle Mog

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

Final Fantasy XIV patch 1.20 released this week, brining with it a new encounter with Good King Moggle Mog XII and his cronies. Luckily, some diligent moogles have gotten their hands on some of the music featured in the new patch, which you’ll find below. Since it’s also the Starlight Celebration, you may find me prancing about Eorzea spreading good cheer and so on.

I think we’ll let this video speak for itself.

The site associated with the project can be found here with a gallery and “Making of” page. What would you think about a Final Fantasy in first-person view? I definitely felt a Deus Ex vibe!

Final Fantasy XIII-2 QA Session!

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

As we’ve written before, we’ve played the first few chapters of Final Fantasy XIII-2 and we’re ready to answer your questions. Apologies, not everyone is represented here tonight, but we will be answering more of your questions tomorrow! Thanks to all our contributors and readers for the great questions!

Chrono Mizaki: Many previews, including one I read on Eurogamer, said that the game is a huge apology letter to the fans as they took many opinions (good and bad) on board when creating XIII-2. So in contrast to the original, how much open it is and how much it places on a player-driven narrative?

I don’t think it’s necessarily an “apology letter” to the fans as the team believes that Final Fantasy XIII (even with the critcisms laid against it) was successful at being the game they wanted to create. However, with the sequel, they have gone out of their way to incorporate player feedback into the development process.

As far as exploration and narrative, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is much more open than it’s predecessor. The Historia Crux will allow you to proceed through the game as you fit, and environments have been designed to avoid the general stuck-in-a-tube design some of XIII’s Cocoon locales feature.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Story Preview – Cocoon and Pulse Revisited

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

It is no understatement that Square Enix stands a lot to prove with Final Fantasy XIII-2, the sequel to this generations most anticipated and ultimately hotly controversial Japanese Role Playing Game, Final Fantasy XIII. Fans have been anticipating the first major sequel to a Final Fantasy title since 2003’s Final Fantasy X-2. Square Enix too has put a lot of effort in taking XIII-2 in an entirely different direction from its predecessor. The company gave us the chance to sit down with what appeared to be a near full build of the game, allowing us to experience the game at our own pace in a three hour session.  (You can find more of our coverage by clicking here.)

Ask several Final Fantasy fans why they love the series and it would not be surprising to get a host of different answers. That intrinsic quality that makes a Final Fantasy game not just great, but a worthy installment, has been the topic of much debate over the years, particularly after each successive release.

While this topic is beyond the scope of this write up, I can say with confidence that Final Fantasy XIII-2 succeeds in capturing this essence, something I had feared the Fabula Nova Crystallis sub brand was incapable of doing. The sequel has been the most fun I have had with a Final Fantasy title this generation, and I remain cautiously optimistic that the full game has the ability to deliver early next year. Part one of my preview focuses primarily on the story and world that the first few hours of the game introduced me to and the immediate reactions I felt.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Developer Interview

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

This interview was part of the Final Fantasy XIII-2 Fan Day (more on that through this link). Questions were asked by various Final Fantasy fan sites to XIII-2 Producer Yoshinori Kitase and Art Director Isamu Kamikokuryou and interpreted via translator, Emi Bliss.

What do you feel are the biggest differences between Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2, and the biggest similarities? (Question provided by: EyesOnFF.com)

Final Fantasy XIII was very much a story driven game and the game play felt more linear due to the fact that the object of the game was to progress through the story. This time, in Final Fantasy XIII-2 we utilized a system called the Historia Crux. This allows the player to travel between different times and locations, and allows much more player choices to be made. That would probably be the biggest difference in XIII and XIII-2, whereas the similarity or elements that are carried over from XIII is the paradigm shift. The paradigm shift was popular among the players due to fast paced battles and this time we have also incorporated more than 150 monsters that can be incorporated into your party, this adds more dimension to the battles. It’s the new and improved paradigm shift.

What challenges has developing the sequel presented that weren’t there for its predecessor? (Question provided by: FinalFantasy-XIII.net)
