What do you think Final Fantasy XX will be like?

Monday, July 25th, 2011

Recently Famitsu had a chance to speak with several Square-Enix alum about their feelings about the future of the Final Fantasy series. They were asked about what they would see Final Fantasy XX being like many (probably), many years in the future. The responses were mostly light-hearted with Final Fantasy Legends producer Takashi Tokita referring to a Smell-O-Vision type mechanic where players would be able to smell the scent of a heroine’s fragrance or the stench of a Malboro. Final Fantasy XIV director/producer Naoki Yoshida (aka Yoshi-P) commented that Final Fantasy XX “will be the second open world FF and will have a main character who can cross time and travel through the worlds of the previous nineteen FF games.

What do you think is possible for Final Fantasy XX? Let us know by leaving a comment below or joining the discussion in our forum.

E3 2011 Coverage Starts Tomorrow! Let’s Discuss

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

Well, this is it folks. We are one day away from E3 2011 and Final Fantasy XIII-2′s big media debut. For Final Fantasy fans, this year’s E3 will likely all be about our first in depth looks at the title. Although E3 has been known to lead to surprises when it comes to the Final Fantasy series. (Anyone else remember the out of nowhere Final Fantasy XIV announcement during the Sony press conference two years ago?)

Just wanted to give everyone a head’s up that the crew will be working fervently this week in order to provide the best Final Fantasy E3 coverage available, so please check back regularly. E3 is just as much about the experience as it is about the news and we want to enjoy this E3 with all of our visitors.

Since the day before E3 is always the most mind numbing, I thought a fun way to pass the time would be to have some discussion going. Here are two questions in particular I think are interesting:

Discussion Questions

(1) What has been your favorite moment of past E3′s and why? [Note: This does not have to be Final Fantasy related.]

(2) What would be your dream Final Fantasy announcement at E3, knowing that this is probably not going to happen? [Note: This does not have to be a realistic announcement, have fun with this.]

Here are my answers:

(1) My favorite E3 moment would have to be the E3 2008, during the Microsoft Press Conference, when Square Enix President Yoichi Wada took the stage to announce that Final Fantasy XIII was also coming to the 360. Now, I was always certain I was going to buy the game on the Playstation 3, but that was one of the biggest bombshells of the generation, and got everyone talking about Final Fantasy XIII. It was a fun time to be a fan.

(2) I could not pick between these two, but I would love to see an HD port of Final Fantasy X announced (lots of other games, such as God of War, Sly Cooper, and Metal Gear Solid have gotten HD ports). Another would be some sort of announcement about Final Fantasy Type-0, since technically it has not been announced for an international release. I would love to see the game in English.

We want to hear from you, please answer the questions using our comments system! And if you are looking for a fun group of gaming fans to enjoy E3 with, feel free to join our forums.

What is a Chocobo?

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

b_misc_fatchocoboIt’s stuff like this that makes me a fan of this series, that’s led me to hopping on board with this site so quickly, it’s always has had, and always will no matter how mainstream the series gets, a subculture of hilariously awesome dedicated fans who are constantly drumming up fun and interesting media related to the series. I haven’t quite found anything like this video before. Titled Burning Question #1: What is a Chocobo?, this video, by the team at Buffering While Bored, attempts to answer the question, “Is Final Fantasy so mainstream that Chocobo has become a household name?” I’m sure you’ll agree that the results are quite hilarious!

Just a word of warning, this video does contain both strong language and suggestive themes. Also, make sure to watch the video to the absolute end.

Once again, thanks to the folks at Buffering While Bored, I recommend you check out some of their other videos via their Youtube Channel. So what are your thoughts on the video? I wouldn’t say I was surprised, so much as I was amused!

Topic du Jour: What justifies a spin-off title?

Friday, August 20th, 2010

b_ffxiirw_logovaan

Final Fantasy is a series that’s known for spin-offs and side stories apart from its main series. Even back in the days of the Gameboy, Square realized the franchise power of the Final Fantasy name. Some Final Fantasy spin-offs are met with acclaim, and others are balked at, with a varying degree of sentiments in-between. These titles extend the franchise nearly as much as the main series, and are a great source of revenue from a fanbase especially with the production costs of HD-console videogames rising to new heights. So we want to hear from you on your opinions on what justifies a spin-off. Take a look at the three prompts below and feel free to respond below in our comments or (preferably) on the discussion thread in our forum.

  1. What standards of gameplay and presentation must be met in order for a spin-off to be considered quality? Which Final Fantasy spinoffs have achieved this? Which haven’t? (Please be specific in your reasoning.)
  2. In developing a spin-off, how important is it to capture the attention of fans of the original game or franchise versus kindling new interest from people who may not have been aware or have played a Final Fantasy?
  3. For the sake of an example: you’re put in charge of creating a spin-off for Final Fantasy XIII. How do you strike a balance between pleasing the fans of the original, re-attracting those who did not like the original, and incorporating your own creative ideas?

As usual we’ve had great answers from our forum members, and we can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this topic! Thanks!

Head over to our Staff page and send me an email along with your name (or screen-name) and a link to your video. Please make sure the site and video are able to be embedded in HTML, and that video is of good visible quality. I’m personally looking forward to watching all of your submissions!

Topic du Jour: Are you ready for a new MMO?

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

ffxivb2Final Fantasy XIV is just over a month away (even sooner if you’ve pre-ordered the Collector’s Edition) and it promises to definitely eat up a healthy portion of your schedule. Since MMORPGs tend to involve a lot of time and time management, we’re wondering on whether you’ve got the time or the interest for Final Fantasy XIV to make room in your schedule. The latter portion of this year seems to be crowded with other MMORPG releases, namely World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and DC Universe Online. Even Final Fantasy XI die-hards may feel that a migration isn’t in their most immediate interest with Abyssea expansions slated over the next several months. Here are today’s prompts:

  1. Are you currently playing another MMORPG and might consider picking up FFXIV to be problematic to your schedule?
  2. How do you manage your time playing MMORPGs or do you at all?
  3. Will you be playing at launch or will you hold off until you get impressions of what the game is like from other players?

As always, you can comment below, but we’d love to have you discuss this topic in or thread on the forum! Come check it out!

Topic du Jour: Tidus Discussion Time

Friday, August 6th, 2010

tidas2Topic du Jour is a segment we’d like to introduce that spurs a community discussion of the selected prompt. As the title suggests, we’d like to have one per day for our readers and forum friends, though we may go a few days in between without a new one just as we get settled. So without further adieu:

We all know Tidus as the main character of Final Fantasy X; a youth plucked from his home in Zanarkand and flung one-thousand years into the future to a Spira living in fear of Sin. There he is guided by Auron into Yuna’s pilgrimage to temporarily end Sin’s path of destruction. This journey is the basis of his character development over the course of the game. There are some that believe Tidus’s introspection (through his intermittent narration of “his story”) helped develop him into a good protagonist, while others feel that a juvenile and selfish attitude dissuaded the player and player character bond. So tell us! What are your thoughts on the character of Tidus?

  1. Do you believe Tidus was a good protagonist?
  2. Do you think Tidus’s relationship with Yuna affected his character positively or negatively?
  3. How does Tidus compare with the other lead roles of the Final Fantasy series?

Discuss this topic in our designated thread on our forum, located here. (You must either sign up or log in to contribute to the thread.) We can’t wait to hear all of your responses!
