Mevius Final Fantasy Revealed in Famitsu

December 16th, 2014 by Tony Garsow

The newest issue of Famitsu reveals a new Final Fantasy title in development at Square Enix. Titled Mevius Final Fantasy, it is being produced by series veteran Yoshinori Kitase. He is joined by Kazushige Nojima, known for his writing on the Final Fantasy VII compilation, Final Fantasy VIII, and Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XV, and other works in the series.

The issue also celebrates the anniversary of the Final Fantasy series with an interview featuring Hironobu Sakaguchi and Yoshinori Kitase.

Stay tuned to Final Fantasy Network as information about this title develops.

Update: Toshiyuki Itahana will be contributing character designs — you’ll remember his work from Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. The platform is said to be iOS/Android with a Spring 2015 release in Japan.

Update #2: The game’s theme is the “warriors of light”, and will feature classic jobs and abilities based off of those jobs. Movement in the field is automated. The team says that even though it’s on a smartphone and not a console, doesn’t mean it’ll be of less quality — they’re aiming for a console quality Final Fantasy experience.

You can view the issue preview page at Famitsu’s website here.

Why does SquareEnix hate us so much?

  • Daniel Masterson

who knows man. I thought with the change in management things would change up a bit more, I mean it definitely has but still. it sucks when japan is just so different in terms of portable gaming than the west and is more profitable for them now.

  • Maxialstar

For gods sake… stop doing so many Final Fantasy….make the sequel of The World Ends With You !

  • Krijn van Alten

They only want our money, that is not the same as hating us.

  • Krijn van Alten

If it´s good, why not? FFD was fun as well.

  • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

This is really uplifting news for Hiroyuki Ito fans.

Seeing as Yoshinori Kitase’s team (FFXIII team) are on this Smartphones game and making it on par with mainline FF, there’s no way they’re also making FFXVI. Therefore, the only FF director that is free of a big AAA project right now (and has been for almost 8 years) is Hiroyuki Ito. He has to be already be making FFXVI for release on PS4/XB1. Won’t be surprised if it’s already deep in pre-production with the story, setting, and character designs already finalised.

  • Sora96

These people have nothing to do with TWEWY.

  • Sora96

While it is true Ito’s team is making XVI, the XIII team is not making this. Toriyama is not working on this and just last week Toriyama said preparations had begun on a brand new title.

  • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Actually, the FFXIII team are working on this. They haven’t announced who the director is yet, but the staff list most likely will include Toriyama in some form.

The new game Toriyama is preparing will most likely be outsourced, as Mevius Final Fantasy is being developed in-house by the FFXIII team and most likely has almost the same number of in-house staff as LR FFXIII devoted to it.

  • Sora96

Proof? Well that’s where you’re wrong, most of the XIII team was moved onto XIV and XV.

  • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Yes, FFXIII staff have moved over to FFXIV and FFXV, but what’s left of them are all working on Mevius Final Fantasy. Therefore, whatever Toriyama is preparing is not being made in-house by Kitase’s team. That team is fully dedicated to Mevius Final Fantasy.

Still, the game is out in Spring 2015, which is not too far off, so maybe the game Toriyama was referring to is the game Kitase’s team plan to make after Mevius releases.

  • Daniel Masterson

I hope you are right. seeing as Ito has literally made the best FF’s I am really hoping he is doing XVI but I just want to play XV then I can look forward to the next thing. If I had a dream list of games it would be
    1) Final Fantasy XII HD Remaster
2)FF VII remake (even though if they never did it I would be ok but imagine if they did!!)
    3) FF VIII remake ( I think this one would be a batter candidate for a remake given its more realistic art style)
    4) and Finally (hehe) FF XVI done with Ito and the FF XII team with sakimoto back as composer!

  • Krijn van Alten

So If they havn´t announced the director yet, then how can you know the XIII team is working on this? Since it’s a minor title, I don’t think any large team is working on this. Isn’t it more likely that the XIII is working or A: a game in the XV world of the versus epic (basically the compilation of FF XV) or that they are working on XVII of XVIII?

And don’t say it’s way to soon for that, these games need more and more development time, so the sooner they start the better. They don’t want a XV repeat.

  • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

We know the FFXIII team is working on this because Kitase is head of the FFXIII team and was the producer of the entire FFXIII trilogy. Also, Mevius is not a minor title, as Kitase has already said it has the largest team to ever work on a Smartphone game and includes many staff that worked on mainline FF games (obviously, seeing as it’s the FFX, FFX-2, FFXIII Trilogy team).

Also, I agree it’s not too soon for FFXVII, but I doubt that game will start development anytime soon due to how long mainline FF games are taking these days. Hiroyuki Ito has been slaving away on FFXVI since at least 2008, after all.

  • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

I really want FFXVI directed by Hiroyuki Ito. That’s the only game that can potentially restore mainline FF to greatness, IMO.

  • Daniel Masterson

Well I mean at least give FF XV a chance, so far, to me at least it is shaping up to something im really excited for.

  • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Yeah, I think FFXV will be decent, but I don’t think it will return mainline FF to greatness. The cast looks like a boyband, only Noctis is playable, and the English dub sounds even worse than FFXIII. It will be good, but not a masterpiece, IMO.

  • Josh Asher

If they’re aiming for console quality on mobile phones, then why can’t they frikin put this on consoles?!

I’m sick of this FF mobile phone crap, I swear eventually the series will move to mobile full time.

  • Josh Asher

I really hope you’re right. Ito needs to direct another FF and expand on the ADB system, and have a huge open world like XV with a more medieval, classic FF tone. Unfortunately I believe XV is their only mainline FF in dev right now (well next to XIV) and there is no XVI in dev yet. I dunno time will tell

  • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

I think FFXVI is in development. However, I think it’s still in the planning and early pre-production stages. I think that by the time FFXV releases in 2016, FFXVI will have entered full production.

My personal belief is that FFXVI will be announced in 2017 as part of the Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary celebrations. It will then release worldwide 1-2 years later.

  • Daniel Masterson

again I will reserve judgment till it comes out and in my opinion FF never lost its greatness. I really enjoyed all the XIII games. Were they a misstep? maybe but I will always be excited for a new FF and if you have one game that didn’t live up to SOME peoples expectations that doesn’t change the amazing stories and experiences you or any other person has had with the previous games.

  • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Agreed. I actually liked FFXIII, too. Well, I only liked the graphics, art direction, and battle system. I didn’t like FFXIII-2 and LR FFXIII at all, though.

FFXV looks like a game that will be controversial upon release. Even now before release there are already people that dislike it. That wasn’t ever a situation with FFXIII. I think it will be good, but I don’t see it making FF return to gaming’s elite tier. We’ll have to wait until FFXVI for that.
